I have had Graves for 6 weeks now. I am on Carbimazole 20mg and am feeling much better than I did. I am still on the beta blockers to lower/control the heart rate but it seems to have stopped going down now and is still quite a bit away from my usual (pre illness) resting heart rate - was 63bpm but is now 74. Any advice is greatly received.
Hi dean74191, the fact that you are already feeling much better is a good treatment outcome so far. Hopefully you will be able to stop taking the beta blockers as your resting heart comes down.
You have to give it more time. On a tapered regime (gradually reducing antithyroid drugs) the treatment period is usually much longer, up to 18 around months.
It might be useful to keep a tab of your heart rate over a long period of time. A graph will then show the general trend more accurately.

When I was thyrotoxic my heart rate was 120+ - now it is between 75-85 and I have been told that this is within the normal range. They say that anything between 60 and 100 is fine. I have stopped taking Propandrol now but always keep some with me just in case. My diagnosis was in May and I am now on block and replace treatment with 40mg Carbinazole and 125mg of Levothyroxine and all of my readings are now within the normal range.

It takes time. However, I can tell you a pulse at 74 is within the normal range. I was just diagnosed with Graves and my heart rate today was also 74 my BP was 138/74. I am not worried at all. If I took my medication for this higher BP, it would crash. This is all with your thyroid. Keep a record of your BP daily and show it to your doc on the next visit, or make an appointment. I really don’t think you have much to worry about.
