Great days and not so great

15 days post op and had a fab day yesterday, only needed to take one tramadol in the morning, got about the house all day on one stick, walked up and down the street on two sticks, did excercises as usual.

Then............. 9pm, very sore, swollen etc, sorest since in hospital. Looks like that's what I get for thinking I no longer needed pain killers and could do anything regardless, lesson learned I think.

Prior to this I was taking 3 tramadol a day and two at night time, I'm desperate to come off them as don't want to get addicted. Much slower day for me today (idiot 😊) xx

Hi good to hear you're doing well, know what you mean about the pain killers, I went on to two 500mg paracetamol four times a day and that did the trick for me,I also do not like the idea of becoming addicted, I had my op six weeks ago and now off all medication.

Hi Fluffy

Think we have all done this and over done it a bit, tbh I think it's the only way we know how far to push ourselves.  I still have some pain deep in the hip (7weeks tomoz).  Ah Tramadol, I got a little obsessed with coming off it, having watched my son go through it, remember it's your body that gets addicted to it not your need to have one (hope that sounds right), I have dropped it off very gradually even down to 1 every 36 hours.  I control the pain with codeine and paracetamol now.  I now realise that controlling the pain is paramount to let you move forward so don't worry you'll get off the meds, you need them now, wish I'd listened to my own advice.

I find now that walking helps with the pain, yes I seem to walk it off, only about 10-15 mins a few times a day.  I have started to use an excercise bike, and trampoline (the latter is hilarious and I love it but dread the neighbours seeing me lol) this week but very gently. I guess my recovery is slower than some and faster than others as said before we are all different.  Take it easy.

Hi

I went through the exsct same issue myself last week l have had both hips replaced and my last thr was 12 weeks and l though l really should be of painkillers by now. But l am still suffering pain not to the degree l was just after op but if l sit for a while ot just at times l can feel every pain in my hips. I can actually feel the implants. I went for a full day without any painkillers worst mistake l made as l was in agony.

I have started to taper myself of tramadol and co-codamol. I was taking 8 tramadol a day after ops l now only take 4 and l was on 8 co-codamol this was during the night l was taking them as well l only take 4. Some days l have to take an extra one if sore. My next step is cutting them down more. Slowly as stopping taking them you will get withdrawels ot just part and parcel of taking that type of medication. Just try and cut your dosage down slowly. You will know how much pain your in and how to manage it. But l still am having good and bad weeks with having both done in such a short space of time. My surgeon says l can take up to a year it will take to fully recover. But please don't worry you will see people who stop taking pain meds quickly and others that are still taking them months later. Everyones diffrent and if you still need them then still take them. Manage your pain and cut them down when you feel ready.

now now Fluffy, be kind to yourself ... you are doing a great job - your body is working so hard to heal herself -I was a yo-yo with my pain medication - I was prescribed Celebrex which works differenty than Tramadol , I think ...I also had 2 THR's within 6 months albeit my affair with Celebrex was ongoing - Tbh , I am not sure if it was working all that great, but when i didn't take it, my pain had an edge to it -

The way I understand it is that it is important in  the early days to keep a level of comfort and inflammatory substance (not sure how to call this), so you can move around etc.   I agree with previos posts to taper of ... find out for yourself when you feel that you need to control the pain the most ...maybe during the day when you want to get out and about (that is when I needed it) - big warm hugeverything is okay, darling renee

I'm following you and learning from you. Mine will be sometime in June. Thanks for posting

Your doing great, just about everyone can overdo things a little, all part of the learning process.  Keep on your tablets for as long as you need them, then come off slowly, and only reduce one dose at a time, you won't get addicted. When your ready, leave the last dose until last, to help with your sleep.

Please do not be so hard on yourself. It is so exciting when we finally feel good that of course we try to do more.

Resting today was smart. I hope it included keeping your leg elevated, some good music and/or friends pampering you a little.

It is wise to be careful about your medication use, but it is also important to keep pain and swelling under control too. No worries - just another little balancing act for you! I think it was Annie K who made the distinction between dependency and addiction and Rose also posted good advice in the same discussion.
