A year after THR I'm still having groin and upper buttocks pain it hurts standing after sitting for awhile, during walking and rising after night's sleep. Please advise
Go back to your GP. Keep a pain diary for at least a week, grading your pain on a scale of 1-10. This will give a baseline. Be prepared for various approaches, physio nerve damage investigations etc, keep the pain diary going through everything suggested and tried.
Seems very wrong do go back to your surgeon.
Wishing you all the best. Richard
dear blum,
warm welcome to the hippies forum ...
what kind of pain is it --- is it muscle sore- or stiffness ?
There are big muscles there and you might not walk or move correctly yet -
Do you see a physical therapist ? Sounds as if muscles are short and gentle stretching might help or a massage -
it is very easy to go back to pre-surgery walking out of habit -
maybe you can share a bit more about your self ..
big warm hug

Hi
I have same problem and currently having physio I'm 7 months post op now. My physio thinks it's tendonitis and I've been having ultrasound and deep massage on my bum. I'm seeing the surgeon in two weeks for follow up and will ask about it then and let you know. I'm particularly bad when I go into sitting position. My physio says the muscles are still weak causing all these problems. Don't suffer in silence I have to ask for physio as I wasn't offered any post op and have waited until now to get any.

Groin pain is so common. I've had it for months but it is getting better. Mine was bad in the mornings too. I was unlucky with community physios who had my stretching the tendon by pressing my knee to my chest and pressing a pillow between my knees. Fortunately I only had a half hip replacement so I haven't dislocated anything but certainly didn't help the groin pain! Make sure you see a physio who knows about hip replacements. If it persists then surely you can ask for an X-ray or MRI but they will probably want you to go down the physio route first. Heat packs and ice packs helped me a bit.
I'd go back to the specialist, as this doesn't sound normal. Take notes before your appointment on when & where it hurts the most. This will help your doctor determine what's going on.
Best wishes!
Im going back for my 1 year followup after surgery. I paln to ask the surgeon but wanted to be able to ask the right questions to discus a plan forward. Thanks for all the responses so far. My pain has seem to have gotten worse even after stretching and such
I reported earlier I have groin pain and upper buttocks 1 year after THR. Have any of you had irratation of the Iliopsoas Tendon after TH surgery. Thanks.
Maggie's point about keeping a diary is very important. If you do get a problem, you can then give the surgeon or doctor the fullest details so that they can help you.
Also, if it goes 'pear shaped' as mine did, it helps in the legal process too.
Best wishes
Graham
I went to my surgeon yesterday for the 1 year followup. X-rays showed all OK. I asked him about the possibility of irritated iliopsoas tendon his answer was highly unlikely because of the posterior operation and the pain in upper buttocks might be from SI joint. His suggestion was to go back to pain clinic neurologist and get injections in SI joint and the tendon. This is where I am now. I would add that the pain I have is mild compared to the pain before total hip replacement.
