anyone know when it’s safe to go back to the gym to do upper body I four weeks post op
I went back to the gym at two weeks with doctors permission. working upper body. I am also walking on the treadmill no incline 1 mile daily.
i was doing a high intensity workout prior to hip replacement. I had one hip done on November 2 and the second hip done on December 10.
Wishing you good luck!
Hi Debbie,
advice locally with my hospital and care is usually wait for advice from your consultant.
Were you given an exercise plan on discharge? It’s probably a good idea to follow that until given professional advice.
Regards
Ali
To be fair Debbie, not all of us see our consultant after the op or get an exercise plan and definitely no physio, we are left to work out our own way through recovery. Even ringing the hospital does not help, when the only advice is , if it hurts, don’t do it. That is where this site can help and advise people who, in the first weeks after their hip op may need help about what to expect, what can they do etc.,
Hey there
As we are both 4 weeks post op me as of today i have been interested in how you are doing. To be contemplating going back to the gym you sound like you are doing amazingly well!! I guess everyones journey is different re progress and so comparisons are not useful. I am extending my walking and seeing a physiotherapist for the first time tomorrow.
Desperate to ditch the one crutch im still using and keeping to restrictions to hopefully ensure the best outcome.
Wishing you all the best x
Hi, did not everyone got a sheet with different exercises on from the Physio at the hospital???
We got it straight after the OP.
and they called me 3 weeks post OP to get me to go to the hospital for physio .
kind regards
Petra
The site is amazing. i had very little support from the hospital post op. When I said I was anxious about coping on my own, I was just told that I would be surprised at how mobile I would be. The carers I hired to come in and change my stockings were unhappy with the equipment I had been given and contacted the community health team who were fantastic sending out an occupational therapist who arranged for me to be given more equipment and fitted a grab rail in the bathroom. i hadn’t realised that under the NHS there is an entitlement to 6 weeks post operative support under their reablement programme. the hospital had made no mention of this. it’s not means tested, but they do take into consideration the savings you have. The hospital I went to was a private hospital contracted to do work for the NHS, and they seemed to be totally uninterested in any after op provision. I chose them on the strength of their outstanding OFSTED, without realising that they cherry picked the easiest patients.
Hi thanks for replies I have to see physio on 18th jan so will probley wait till after that i can’t see my consultant till August which is terrible but that’s nhs for you
still use one crutch and have bit stiffness and not sleeping great x
i hear ya!! Totally relate. I go walking and it doesnt feel quite normal yet but i have to remember im going further than i have in 5 or so years.
Good luck with your journey so wishing you all the best x
All depends on your surgeon and Physio - I was back to the gym with no restrictions at 10 weeks.
Hi there, my doctor released me to go back to the gym at 6 weeks. Just be sure to bend and squat accordingly. avoid going too low.

Hi Debbie,
I got a Doctor’s referral to go to the gym. I was at week 3 post op when I first went. I’m week 8 now. I was put on 3 different machines to start with and supervised. This lasts an hour and there is another hour of cardio exercises. I’ve been taking part in badminton games. I can’t run around the court, I hobble and have to bend down gingerly to pick up the shuttle cock, which I’m getting lots of practice at! This is 2 days a week for 6 months, but I’ll be returning to work at the end of the month, hopefully. Am waiting to have my other hip done, so will have to reapply for the referral once that’s done.
