i had total hip replacement and 2cms put in my left leg on 20th may I still can't walk I am still in pain I am very emotional as I thought I would be up and walking by now I got discharged with no frame luckily I had one at home I can't cook or make my self a drink I don't see surgeon till 14 July and haven't been given any physio is this normal
Hi Poohbear
I am sorry you are going through this. If I were you I would see if your hospital has a patient complaints dept.. I would also suggest you get intouch with your surgeon and let him know how you have been treated. If you are in pain you really should be contacting your surgeon and not leaving it till your next appointment..
Hi Poohbear,
well to say i'm shocked is the understatement of the year!!! I agree with hailea, you need to make a formal complaint in writing (not email) send it recorded delivery to the hospitals CEO, their name and contact details you can find on the hospitals website, in the mean time, try calling them and if no joy then see your own GP and maybe he can contact them on your behalf, in any event you should not be left suffering until your next app.
good luck, be positive, don't be fobbed off,
let us know how you get on.
regards,
Lynne.
This doesn't sound right to me - whilst it's normal to be in pain and at times this can be quite bad, it's not normal to have such little progress in terms of getting around. Additionally I thought the usual follow-up time frame is 6 weeks - yours is almost 8 weeks? At least get it checked out - everyones pain threshold is different and you need to make sure that there is not an underlying reason that is preventing you from moving forward other. Once you have that reassurance then it will be hard work but at least you will have the confidence to push on and try and make progress.
I have had no physio since leaving hospital and have no dates for further physio sessions - this may be because I'm relatively young for a THR.
Firstly get in touch with your GP to get an urgent appointment re pain releif
next make a formal complaint to the hospital, giving a list the parts of your treatment that was lacking
get in touch with the surgeon, possibly via is secretary and make sure you get a response PDQ, tell him all the treatment failings as well.
i have had no physio since coming home but had several sessions in hospital, a leaflet to follow, also had a preop hip school where physio demonstrated the excercises. Have found useful app, pocket physio and have used that with approval from the physio I showed it to.
before op I was also supplies with all aids, bar the crutches I would need at home, was discharged with those. You might be adding lack of equipment to your list for the complaints.
Above all all do not suffer in silence.
Hi Poohbear
Oh dear, something doesn't sound right here. So sorry you feel things are not going as planned
I was only on a frame for the first 12 hrs or so, then straight onto crutches which I came home with
Had my op 10th June (2 wks today) and within a couple of days was able to make and carry a drink. I can do a little light housework, wash a few pots etc, No follow up physio, just exercises given by hospital.
Still get some night time pain, but quite mobile
You need to be talking to someone - try the orthopaedic ward you were on - mine were very suppotive and helpful, the surgeon's secretary or your GP. Complain to CEO, but in general, you won't get a quick answer and I think you need one. Be assertive because you need some help and assistance. I am 63 by the way
Hope you get everything you need
Kindest wishes Linda xx
Poohbear,
Everyone above has said it already, but file that complaint. Raise hell if need be.
Noone deserves to be inmpain and not get help. Try to make sure they don't send you off with simply 'take more pain meds' either.
From what you told, they added 2cm to your leg as well.
So aside from a new hip, your entire posture hs changed now. They need to help you excercise to compensate for that. And a walker is nice for the first days, but not for the linger run.
Hugs
Arjan
Your hospital should have a dept called pals where you go if you have a complaint, were you given crutches because I am really surprised that you were sent home with nothing because they wouldn't send you home unless you had help
Ok so I rung secretary and had to go for x Ray hip is in so back home waiting for surgeon to have a look at it but told them when I rung that my knee couldn't take the wait of my leg n that I couldn't walk and that I'm still on 30 mg slow release morphine twice a day and oramorph every four hours I had hip done at rugby they overdoes me with morphine blue light me to Coventry put me in critical care put me on ward then I was left to it I didn't see a doc about my hip since its been done my partner spoke to surgeon after op who told her I might have to have knee turned but I'm left to wait again I want this all to be over before I complain but I have crutches at home already but had no physio teach me anything all my weight has to go on frame so back to the waiting game and me to keep trying all the time
Maybe because they seed bone to lengthen your leg they want you to rest it?
speak to your gp as this doesn't sound right to me at all. You shouldn't have left hospital without crutches or at least a frame. I had mine done on the 21st May and am walking with one crutch and a few steps without one at all. Have had physio once and going again tomorrow. Please make an appointment with your gp urgently to fget it sorted out. Love Gill xx
This is a very difficult time for you and as one who worked at a high level in the NHS and has a ligit medical neg claim concerning my LTHR I understand your concerns.
The first thing to do is contact your GP re both physio and medication,s/he can sort both.
2nd, I advise you keep a daily diary, date and time it, you will need this for any subsequent claim (you have upto 3 yrs to make a claim so no rush but pain can distort memory)
3rd, contact your Consultants sec for an earlier appt and demand details why you were "blue lighted" to a different hospital.
All medical professionals must take out ins, usually MDU or MPS (its very expensive but covers for all problems like this and we are not allowed to practice without it) so it does not affect the particular doctor.
I am concerned re the amount of morphine you require as it is addictive so please get on the phone tomorrow and get back to us, if you would like to speak to me, please send me a direct message.
Best wishes, Dot.
Did they not give you any elbow crutches if they didn't give you a frame? Most people seem to be able to get around on them at 4 weeks. I would contact your doctor if they did not give you a hospital contact no and try to get some support. Normally also there will be some exercises you are given to do in hospital.
