hope you are all doing great today whatever stage you are at, as I have now got my date (monday) I don't know whether or not to get my hair cut and coloured before or after my opp. I hate going anywhere with my roots showing, yeah I know vanity but I won't feel like a back wash and all the sitting in hsalon chairs afterwards, also i have a dental appt. on monday the 4th august, I knew this would happen , but my teeth are important, so what I'm asking is, 1. do I wait to get my hair done, and 2. should I put my dental on hold? it seems strange , but I find it hard to remember how I felt in the first few weeks post opp. so any advice would be welcome,
Hair done is ESSENTIAL pre operative preparation. Full works. You dont know when you will feel up to it again.
My hairdresser has a massage chairwhich tilts back at the sink - makes the post operative appointment at the hair dressers much more comfortable.
In your shoes i would put off the dental appointment for a few weeks in case it puts in train a series of treatments and appointments. Best be in good shape for that. Your body will be trying to heal one set of bones - you dont want to make it do 2 things at the same time unless necessary. Teeth in this case are less essential than hair.
I was able to shower the day after my operation as had waterproof dressings and had full hair drying kit with me - including hot brush. I felt wonderful from the neck up - and even wore make up. As I had horrid staples in I did not want to sit on a chair so I walked around or sat up in bed all made up and suitably coiffed. Made a huge difference to sense of being a woman.
i think you should tell the dentist about your op. I think you will find that as you might still be on anti DVT medication, your dentist would prefer to not be poking around your gums etc at that early stage. Just ask.
i had hair done just before surgery and also went to chiropodist for a good tidy up of my feet.
Defo get the hair done as getting dye rinsed out after op could be a problem . Looking good helps to feel good in my opinion.Get toe nails cut. I'd ask for advice about dentist as I read somewhere that we may need antibiotic before deep dental work after op. I'm in to week 4 and strongly believe in taking any help available for early weeks. This is my first day on my own and I'm enjoying it. Eat walk feet up due to swelling the exercise. Then start over. Few household chores in between.
Your lucky you could shower so qui ckly. I had staples out July 14 th and was told not to shower for at least 10 days. Lovely auxiliary nurse washe my hair overr a basin in Hosp and I can wash it over kitchen sink using perching stool. As you say makes us women feel good.
Attracta - I had waterproof dressing and it worked and this was from a conservative surgeon. Why cant they standardise some aspects of care? This site is really exposing differences!!
Hi Lynne, I would definitely get your hair done if you possibly can.... as for your teeth why not postpone it until later, if I remember back I was very tired and exhausted for the first few weeks and sitting in a dentists chair would have been a no no to me hope this helps xx
I had my hair cut the day before surgery, as I knew it would be tricky to wait until after - having to be reliant on my Husband to take me there and back and wait. Too stressful! Also I wasn't sure how comfortable I would be sitting for any length of time in the hairdresser's chair. I now know it would have been awful, because of where my scar is. I colour my own hair, so I sorted that out too.
Have I got it right that your dental appt is after your op ? If so, it seems a bit close. The first couple of weeks are definitely the worst for mobility/aches/stiffness/soreness, so I would go for a later appointment if I were you. I wouldn't try to bring it forward before the op because of the risk of infection or having your surgery cancelled because of it.
Thanks everyone, for all your advice, as usual my hippy family are there for me, I will make a hair appt for Saturday, they can do my toes at the same time, I will post a pre opp. pic, and then I'll post from my hospital room, and I bet the difference will be amazing lol, a freind said to me the other day that I have aged since the last opp. I know he didn't mean to be insulting just stating a fact, so I'm posting to pic's one taken last year, and one taken last week, honest answers on a postcard please lol, xx the first one was taken 6th august last year and the 2nd last week
hell my head hurts I didn't know stand on my head to look at your pics was part of my recovery lol I think the upside down one is younger than the upright one hopoe that's the right answer
Hi Lynne I'd leave out the nail polish you will have to remove it! When you’re in surgery, you will have a probe placed on the end of your finger to read the oxygen level in your blood. This probe cannot read through artificial nails or nail polish. No polish, jewellery, make-up is generally the rule.
As a chap, I can only say that I'm sure you'll look terrific
My recollection is that they strongly advise laying off dental work after the op for a decent period becuase of the possibility of infection which then spreads and of course as you may well be on anticoagulants.
Graphic image to mind there - Lynne bleeding uncontrollably from mouth whilst white blood cells being devastated as infectious bugs grab onto the hip metal work...its good advice, all the same
Lynne, can't say you've aged but I know that my family & friends all said that I looked more drawn, peely-wally and almost as if I was flinching a bit in the latter days before my op .... and now I don't (happier, fresher look apparently! Or maybe it's that new mild but manly moisturiser!
I'm sure you'll feel the same once you're through it all.
Mind you, it did take a while for the bleeding to stop when I sliced into my finger while cooking over the weekend.... the anticoagulants doing what they said on the tin!
