Hi Yvonne, I started taking Amlopodine 5mg in October and gradually over the last 2 months my hair has started falling out, now it is so bad I phoned my GP this morning and he told me to stop taking the Amlopodine IMMEDIATELY!! I am so upset and just hope and pray my hair returns to how it was, thick, shiny and healthy!
Just come off them today!! My hair has fallen out so badly and I also started to suffer from memory loss, I was only taking Amlopodine for 4 months! So angry doctors are prescribing this poison! Kate
Hi Yvonne yes I am on amlodipine as well and my hair is thinning something bad and it's brutal and it's causing myself with things to drop I'm on propanolol and Losartin as well
I too was expert hair loss. Then a hair loss professional asked if I were taking any BP meds, I said yes; she told me to check because the meds could be causing the loss. Well I have been talking Amlodipine for several years. I am going to ask my doctor for a different medication.
Hi Babsey, this hair thinning especially at the front of my hairline got pretty bad with amilodipine I stopped taking them Slowly and in a month my hair was sprouting back. Unfortunately my blood pressure was starting to rise again and I got the headaches which took me to the doctor in the firs,t place. My GP then gave me indapamide 2.5mg as I also had swelling ankles which I have never suffered with before. They took my blood pressure right down to my normal younger days. I am 56 now and been on the meds about 5 or 6 years. Thought it was all good but since being on these for about 8 months now I have noticed a weight gain and also,ot perspiring and also quite breathless and my hair is thinning again but not too bad at the moment. My daughter was prescribed a blood pressure medication for something to do with her migraines and in a week of taking it her hair was half the thickness it was awful for her she went back to the doctors and the GP said she had not heard of this side effect which I find hard to believe. The proof was there for her to see, so I know all these people with thinning hair can't just be coincidence. I have also truednfkaxseed oil and foods to lower the blood pressure so that maybe I can get off the offending drugs but my blood pressure stays around the same mark. Hope you get your meds changed to something more suitable I am going to go through this with my GP bald is not an option for a lady and I don't think that's vanity I have always had thick long hair which I have looked after and cared for even tho it is grey now age doesn't do us many favours my hairs the best thing I have now lol kind regards Debbie
I take a herbal supplement called Hawthorn and it lowers my pressure.
I know Coleus forskohlii (a mint) is good for lowering pressure as well. It even lower the pressure on my eyes. Of course, the doctor knows best... My boyfriend gets diarrhea if he takes those supplements. It works great for me.
Yes, I started amlodipine about a year ago and have noticed hair loss. I am sure it it this medication and will stop taking it with the advice of my doctor.
Glad to Amlodipine is more than likely why my hair went from shoulder length to. Maybe 3in in some areas and some areas still shoulder length. I've been taking Calcium, Omega 3 and Vitafusions Gorgeous Skin and Hair and Nails. I'll be asking my Dr. if this is truly a side effect and to switch my bp med asap.
Wow this discussion is amazing! I am 45 yrs old been taking Amlodipine for almost 3 yrs now and my hair is falling out really bad! I told my hair stylist and that's the 1st thing she asked was if I was taking bp meds! That is what made me do some research and I found this discussion! That is crazy!!! I'm stopping this med immediately and calling my dr bc we can't all be wrong. My hair is coming out in thick wads!!! I hope it grows back too bc I have lost so much hair in the last 1yr and a half! Thanks for the the input here in this discussion...I am shocked to know this about this drug! God bless each and every one of you!
I was given Amlodipine 5mg two tablets daily in 2017 while in the hospital and a prescription upon release. I noticed my hair thinning in the top too. After taking them for a couple of days, I read the side effects and it said causes alopecia. I immediately stop taking it and notified my doctor. I also went to a dermatologist that said that's what it looked like to her. Unfortunately, she left the hospital before my scheduled appointment to test me for that. My hair has shown no signs of growing back.
My doctor increased my dosage of amlodipine to 10 mg, my legs and feet were swelling terribly AND my hair thinned considerably. He has now taken me off amlodipine completely for a few weeks to see how my blood pressure would change, and it has stayed in a very healthy range 118/70...My ankles are now nice and visible, no more swelling at all and I hope to see my hair grow back.
I experienced the swelling in my feet and legs too. I also had chills. The chills went away quickly, but because I have lymphedema in both legs and feet that made them a little harder to get down. Diuretics is not an option for people with lymphedema, but I knew I would be taking therapy because I had been out of my garments for too long. Let me know if your hair does grow back and what you did to help it.
yvonne85501...I too didn't have any luck when taking Amlodipine. My then-doctor prescribed 5 mgs...things were fine, but for a very short time. The 5mgs wasn't controlling the bp very well, so he upped the dosage to 10mgs.
Anything I read says that Drs. shouldn't double the dosage when it appears the medicine isn't lowering the bp. Doubling up only increases the incidence of side effects. How true! On the 10mgs. my feet/ankles & lower legs swelled badly. Back to the Dr.. He took me off, & prescribed other meds. I have a relative who takes Amlodipine, & she's absolutely fine with it. She did notice though, that her bp had spiked a little in the afternoon, so her Dr. suggested she take 2.5 in the morning, then 2.5 in the afternoon. It worked! I also have 2 friends who are on Amlodipine..no problems. I read all sorts of horror stories here on the forum about this medication. Quite frankly, I'd never ever take it again, regardless of what my Dr. were to say. I left the other Dr.,& returned to the one I had for over 30 years. While I trust the man implicitly, I would be stubborn if he were to suggest it.
Taking a diuretic while on Amlodipine to reduce the swelling will not work. The swelling caused by the drug isn't the same as ordinary water retention.
I hope you get some resolve.
what are you taking now?
thanks.
hi…what did you end up taking instead?
thank you
Same happened to me last September. Took it less than a month and lost about half my hair. I quit taking immediately and sadly no hair has grown back, and I am going through periods of no growth at all! I am in a 2 month stagnant period right now. I have gone to wearing wigs. It is a heart breaking/gut wrenching experience.
Hi Janice and Christina,
Try taking Biotin tablets for your hair growth. I experienced hair loss first from amlodipine then I asked to be switched to something different (don’t remember the name of it) but both medications caused hair loss! My doctor swore it was not the medication but I had not experienced as much hair loss prior to starting blood pressure meds and I took myself off of them in October of 2018 and just have maintained my diet with less sodium, drinking more water, increased my exercising and I use essential oils and my BP has been better than it was on the meds! Started taking Biotin immediately after I stopped and my hair has grown back, it’s beautiful and thick again and it made my nails strong b/c they used to paper thin that I could bend them over, well not anymore! I just take the Biotin tablets that Walmart sells.
Hope this helps! Take care
I have not had success with biotin yet.
7 yrs 5000 biotin also MSN
at least 10 others
shower filter
water softner
the list is never ending.
Hi a few months back i was prescribed this nasty drug to take in conjunction with other blood pressure tablets i had taken for years and had no complications before this crappy tablet was added on over the top of my usual prescription ( bendrofluazide and enalapril) . However within two months of taking this horrible amlodipine my hair began falling out in chunks particularly when i washed it or when i woke up piles of hair was on the bed sheets . I am at a stage where I’m having to cover my head in scarves and people are asking me if i had had any kimo treatment. Because of the pandemic i can’t get a doctor to see me .I’ve been prescribed even worse scalp treatments that only served to irritate the scalp even more . I was told over the phone by a GP, to stop taking this amlodipine which i did immediately . Now this dreadful rubbish has triggered what seems to be a nasty form of alopecia that wont stop doing its damage . In the middle of the pandemic there are no doctors appointments available . I’m so angry that this has caused me more anxiety and stress Its so distressing my blood pressure must be through the roof by now and I’m in tears a lot and i refuse to go out its totally soul destroying. You are not alone and I don’t believe this ia a rare side effect at all , as the drug leaflet is trying to suggest , what utter rubbish .
