Hair loss

Having been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (hashimotos) for 18months now and on 125mg of thyroxine, my hair is still very thin and breaking and falling out. Not quite as much as it was just before I was diagnosed but even with my meds it's still not how it used to be. Has anyone had the same experience and managed to get their hair back to normal?

I have Hashimoto's also and back before I was diagnosed I was losing hair on my  head.  I also lost eyebrow hair.  Since I have had Hashimoto's disease since 1987, some of my head hair came back but not all of my eyebrow hair. You may need adjustments to your thyroid replacement meds from time to time. I know how upsetting it is. The thyroid controls hair growth and body temp and in women menstruation. It can take a while to get stronger hair growth, and I had to up my meds and even take/change to a different med as level would not come up. Ask your doctor if you need another type of thyroid med in addition to the one you are on now. i hope this helps. I am an RN.

I would question whether you are getting enough thyroxine. Do you have any other underactive symptoms? Might be worth a visit back to your doctor to tell them your concern and ask.

As you are not complaining about any other symptoms other than the hair loss I would suspect that your ferritin levels are not optimal (for you).  When you get blood tests done be sure to get a copy for yourself.  Your ferritin may fall within the range but that is not always optimal for you.  Everyone is different.  From my experience ferritin levels need to be between 80 - 95 for women to prevent hair loss.  The range is huge 15-400 and we need to find our sweet spot within the range.  I take iron supplements every few days to keep mine at an adequate level.  My hair is ok.

I was diagnosed nearly a year ago, aged 42 and hairloss along with tiredness, brain fog and constipation were my main symptoms. I did not gain weight. I started on 50 mcg of levothyroxine and after repeated visits( told at 5.0 by the receptionist that I was in normal range) was eventually put on 100. My health area is one of the most cash strapped so no testing for T3, antibodies or referrals if TSH within normal range. I had to fight to get T4 tested. When I first saw my GP she said my hair would soon grow back. it was thinning for years after being thick and long in my teens;this has not happened and is a real disappointment. I look like a scarecrow! Interested in supplements but concerned that ferritin might bung me up! I wonder if liquid iron may be a better solution to getting iron levels up? I have heard that biotin and other minerals are important too.
