After having a few very grim days (4 weeks post tkr), I took the plunge today to tackle a shower in my over bath shower. It wasn't as difficult as I had imagined and I feel I have at least made some sort of progress this week. At least I feel more human!
Well done . I am ok with the bath albeit very unladylike more like a duck ! So will now try the shower. You can tick the box
It is amazing how good a hot shower can make you feel, gives you a real boost.
Way to go! Yes, a real cleaning can't compare to anything. And the life it seems to give is huge. Way to take the plunge.
Good for you.! I was advised no bath for six weeks and when I did try to have bath got stuck in it.!!! Once in bath a forgot how difficult it would be to get back out... Be aware of.this. You take all this for granted....
Well done I have got an over bath shower haven't tried it yet will be 2 weeks post op on Saturday will probably wait a couple of weeks
I must admit, I started having a shower as soon as I was out of hospital, wrapped knee in cling film first time, but then just relied on the waterproof dressing.
My toilet is quite close to the bath so I was able to sit on the loo and use my good leg to propel the bad one into the bath, I then used the edge of the bath to help get me on my feet (my daughter was on standby just in case). I did have the good sense to purchase a rubber bath mat to avoid slipping. It was a bit trickier getting back out but I basically reversed the procedure. However, I don't think I would have attempted it without someone on hand to help if needed.
Lol carol I bet that felt good!!!! It takes me ages to get into the bath but I love it cos its the only time I feel nowt in my knee ha ha
I certainly wouldn't have had the confidence to try at two weeks, I had been using my sister's walk in shower but it was such a palaver packing all my bits, getting there etc. and certainly not the same as being at home. Wait a couple of weeks to build up your confidence, good luck.
It felt great Andrea, I am not really a bath person so being able to have a quickish shower from here in will definitely be an asset, I just didn't feel clean with a wash down!
No I agree it's tricky.... You dont think of it or realise how much you need those knees to get out of bath. It was getting out of bath for me that caused more problem, I had a rubber mat but ended up having to drag all my clothes and bath towel into bath to act as cushion and turn myself around and try and half kneel on my knees to get out. I still cannot kneel properly.. It's very frustrating 😤
The things we do - you couldn't make it up !
No im exactly the same after my op they told me no bath or shower for 14 days and it was torture lol I felt dirty though I wasnt!! Im a shower person but now the bath brings me at least 15 mins temp relief to my knee!!! So its worth the struggle to get in and out!!
Janice try a shower seat or one of those steps that children use to reach the loo??? They may help and both are sturdy??
Andrea, thank-you but I'm all recovered thankfully, well 18months post op. But still very wary getting out of bath as I had both knees replaced ...
Oooooooo thats brave!!! I cert wont be avin my other one done!!!! Il put up with it ha ha - Well done you!!!!
Well done, I use the over bath shower every night now, started at 3 weeks...5 weeks post op today, the relief and comfort of a shower and being able with a bit of maneuvering makes so much difference.
I keep the warmth of the water on the knee for a while and this seems to help.
I think it helps relax me as well.
Hi Hazel It just gave me 10 minutes of normality and definately gave me a boost of confidence. All I need now is for my knee to start behaving!
Hi all,
They let me shower in the hospital 2 days after the operation. It did feel good.
