Has anyone experience of competitive riding following a THR?

I have finally made the decision to have a THR as although I am still, with difficulty, managing to cope with day to day life, I can no longer ride my horse. Riding means a great deal to me and if anyone has some positive stories to tell of continuing to ride after the operation, including how long it took to get back in the saddle, I would be grateful to hear them. My consultant has assured me that I should be able to ride and he is more concerned about me falling off.

Age 45, I had my THR 6 weeks ago, still have my horse but have been unable to ride for the last three painful years...I may start again but in the short term I'm most looking forward to pain free long walks and cycling with my family! Any way, the reason for post is that at my 4 week check I was in the waiting room with a hunt chairman there for his 3 month check who was riding very soon after his THR and was hugely positive about riding and encouraging me to get back in the saddle ASAP.  Falling would be a risk, but isn't it always??

Thank you, that does sound positive. I am looking forward to being able to walk and cycle with my family too, but riding is the thing I miss most!

I know a couple of people who were back riding around 6 months after op...depends on   the ' curvature' of your horse!!  and just gentle hacking for a while! Good luck....

I'm just over six weeks post op and am desperate to get back riding.

My consultant had said yes bit to take things slowly, I've got a great Physio who is also a dressage rider and specialises in biomechanics, she has a mechanical horse that I'm going to start using around July time hopefully. This should sort out my riding muscles and get me used to getting on and off.

My aim is to get back in the real saddle by august, and out competing by the end of the year. Not going to jump any more, sticking to dressage. Looking at saddles this weekend to find one that's not going to be too wide and have to get a massive mounting block made as my boy is 17.3 and still growing!

Not quite the same as you..but. I used to love bike riding, which due to my painful hip I've been unable to do for 2yrs.

12 wks in from my THR and I still can't quite get either leg over the saddle properly, and even on a turbo trainer in the garage only doing easy spinning,my operated hip is still painful..

I'm going to leave it for a month or so and have another go.

As always everybody's outcome is different..

A younger friend of mine has been skiing just 20 wks post op,with no problems, and he is having his other hip replaced next month..he sailed through with no issues, lucky lad.

At your young age I would expect you'll have no problems either, from what I've read the main priority is to find a surgeon with a good track record.

The actual surgeon who did mine at Wrightington I never saw either before or post op.

good luck.

The mechanical horse sounds a great way to get started - my horse is not the most docile so it would be good to practise before I get back on him! I think there is one at a riding school near me so I'll investigate that. I intend to stick to dressage too

Thank you and I hope I've found a good surgeon but I'll be more convinced once the op is over. I have spoken to him about riding again and he was not averse to it. I hope you manage to get cycling again soon

It was falling off a horse that got me in this state in the first place!!! But I am keen to ride again eventually.... just nothing too frisky!

Mines rising five and has been wintered out for the last six months but is a really good boy.

People keep telling me my arthritis was from all the falls but I mostly landed on my head wink
