Hello everyone- I have been diagnosed with IBs after having a bowel MRI, blood tests stool sakes etc they said they didn't think I needed a colonoscopy due to good bloods and scans.
I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced 'attacks' at night. I have ready on quite a few websites that ibs doesn't occur at night but mine certainly does! If I've eaten a lot that day or 'bad' food I will wake up around an hour after falling asleep with the worst cramps ever, I'll have mega wind and I'll have to run to the toilet and have a loose stool (sorry) I'll then start shaking uncontrollably and feel sick- I have my antispasmodic and fall asleep and by morning I'm ok just feel a bit sore muscles.
i still have the usual ibs bloating, wind, cramps etc during the day but I've never seen anyone have the same night time occurrences as me. Also the last few days I've experienced a stitch like pain on my right lower side between my hip and rib- I wasn't sure if it was hunger pain or something else but it's really sharp.
Wheat intolerance? Sorry to keep saying this on most of my posts but i used to wake in the early hours at times feeling really hungry then the cramping and pains started and lasted for 4 hours.
U have been wheat free for over a month and feel great. Even after 1 week i noticed a difference.
I was interested in your blog because I wake up every night after about 2-3 hours sleep with cramps in my decending colon ( left side ) and it does not matter what I have eaten. This is when I decide to get up and do something.
When I had my colonoscopy at the hospital the consultant spoke to me at great length after the examination I wanted to know as much as he would tell me about IBS. He explained that he had done numerous tests on people with IBS who complained of pains and cramping. He then said that after spending some enormous amount of NHS money he had found absolutely nothing physically wrong except that men seemed to complain about pain on the left side ( decending colon ) and women mainly complained about pain on the right side ( ascending colon ) He then said before you ask the question I have no idea why there should be a difference. I did appreciate his honesty, he did not try and palm me off with some medical waffle.
We are no further forward but at least you know you are not alone. I better add that sometimes I get pains on the right side but they do not last long. For me it is normally on the left.
Hope this gives you some information if nothing else.
Hello there - I am new to this forum, but read your post and saw similarities to me. Yes, I can experience symptoms of my "so-called" IBS at any given time, including night time and have experienced similar scenarios. I get the upper stomach cramps and the need to "bear down and go to the loo" at any time of the day or night. My GP is currently considering the possibility of gallstones and tells me that gallstone attacks often happen at night after eating and she said you can get diahorrea as a by-product of gallstone attacks. I don't know if I have them yet though....but something causes it in me!
