Hi. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in November last year and have been off work since. On the run up to Christmas I felt much better but then on Boxing Day I felt terrible and have been pretty bad ever since. Went back to doctors today who has given me a line for another 8 weeks off work and said he has referred me to a Specialist as he thinks I should be getting back to normal (whatever normal is with this condition!) by now. Has anyone on here been to see a specialist about their Fibro? What does it involve, do they give you more tests etc? Any help/advice on this would be much appreciated.
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia three years ago and was referred to a GP specialising in rheumatology. He sent me for physio and on a pain management course based around cognative behavioural therapy. I found these both very helpful. I don't think it is possible for life to return to "normal" when one has Fibromyalgia, but by making changes, keeping active but not doing too much (pacing), taking pain medication regularly (and I'm on antidepressants which seems to help a lot), its possible to enjoy life again. I still do the physio exercises every day(mainly stretching and no strenuous exercise) and I find that helps to ward off stiffness and strengthens my muscles to support my joints. I also try to get out for a walk every day and I don't sit for more than half an hour at a time - I get up and move around every so often - this also releives my joints and the exercise makes me feel better. If you can get back to work its worth the effort - its helped me to feel better about myself and that seems to help with the condition. Hope this helps.
Thanks for your reply Anne. I have physio exercises to do and I'm trying my best to pace myself. Trying to eat healthier, always had a healthy diet anyway as I'm a vegetarian so eat loads of fruit and veg. I've been going out for a walk whenever I can too and am going to do yoga on Wii Fit. Thanks again.
