hi all im 14 days post op thr athome we dont have a shower we only have a bath up until yesterday ive been having a strip wash everyday then yesterday my husband took me to my mother inlaws for a shower as she has disabled wet room the travel ie in and out the car was awful found it very painful but the shower was wonderful must have sat under it for 10 minutes lol however it totally wiped me out and was in agony by the time we arrived home was definatley too soon to go out.what i wanted to know was how soon before you can have a bath the enhanced recovery team told me that it can be up to 3months depending on your hip precautions just wondered how long before some of you s have managed to have 1 .

Thanks

Tracy xx

hi tracy ,

I remember that first shower after 14 days of strip washing !!!  you are right, it was exhausting eventhough I had a home health nurse who dried me off -

I am assuming that your scar is closed, with  no seeping or puncture holes ?

when is your follow up appointment? I would wait until then and ask your surgeon, just to be on the safe side -

3 months seems a bit long - I am sure that there are members who will chime in ..

To know that you can take a shower at your mothers' is nice albeit exhausting -

How are you doing otherwise?

Hi Tracy.

Your Surgeon will tell you. My shower was over the bath and my restrictions were lifted for the shower at my 6 week checkup. I had to have a step stool and use crutch as support. I havent done baths for years but it would have been 12 weeks. Now got rid of the bath and have a lovely shower instead. No way was I ready at 2 weeks to go out. My first in tge car was 4 weeks x

Hi Tracy hope your feeling better...im 43 and I'm getting my right hip done in 4 weeks time....then the left 3 months later...due to severe arthritis its also in my back which makes me dread the op even more because my pain is awful in my back....its even worse when I work on an orthopaedic ward so I know what I've got coming and how people struggle...my problem is I can't sleep and I'm shattered already at this time of the morning 😏 sorry if im being a whinge...but it depresses me to think im going to be relying on others for months 😏 take care x

hi Deborah your story is very similar to mine im 48 and also have severe oestoarthritis in both hips and my discs are crumbling in my back  and also have a trapped nerve so i know how you feel im due to have thr on my left hip in 6months once my right hip has healed. dont be sorry for having a moan i know exactly what you mean i couldnt sleep before op and cant sleep now we just have look to the future and know that once weve healed we will get our life back plus be able to sleep.I hate to rely on others too but it cant be helped and my hubby has been brilliant which has surprised me lol. Good luck for your op and speedy recovery but make sure you get plenty of rest.

sleeping or unable to get a good night sleep is frustrating - what helped me through it was to not make a big deal about it --- the first 2-3 weeks I had numerous trips to the bathroom - so that was very disruptive ( I live alone) and exhausting - made sure I did lie on bed , on back and stretched my legs/hips and took naps - for some reason naps came easier - I was grateful for 3-4 hours uniterrupted sleep by then -

For leg cramps and restless legs I drank some tonic water (tip from one of our forum members )

Make sure that scar is complety closed before you rub bio oil on or even close to it, okay --- Maybe it was just me but I had an allergic reaction to bio oil -

Oh dear, a lot of patience is required, darling - you are still early in your recovery from major invasive surgery -

continue to be gentle to your self - your body is a wonderland, you see - healing and repairing the damage - the only thing you can do at the moment is to allow her to do her job ----

angel blessings

Hi deborah,

Warm welcome to this forum --

Goodness, yeah that must be daunting to work on an orthopedic ward and having hip surgery in 4 weeks time -

Of course we were not at our best right after surgery, however, that nasty grinding OA pain was gone ...ask the patients ... seriously

Maybe you want to start your own discussion and share with us what concerns you -

Hi Tracy, sorry that you are having such a bad time of it. I can't get into a bath, so the occupational Therapist, gave me a plastic board that goes over the bath, with grab rails to help me  in & out. This only works if you have a over the bath type shower. If not, maybe if you got the type of shower that connects to the bath taps?

Hi Tracey I am 12 weeks post thr today. Restrictions lifted at 8 weeks by surgeon but been sitting on 8 inch bath stool I'm bath .last night very carefully sat properly in Bath. Was beautiful feeling at last. Don't risk this until you cleared yo do so as just not worth the risk. Every day gets better. First time today I managed to bend to do up my shoe lace! Feels like such achievement as been too uncomfortable until now to do this.

Please rest and don't overdo it xx

Hi Tracey,

I am 16 days po, and have managed very very well with a festival shower bought from Amazon, £24.99< worth every penny...basically its a small rechargable pump with a 1.8 m length of hose with a shower head attached, you sit yourself in a chair,( I used 2 plastic garden chairs, one stacked on top of the other for a bit extra height, ) have one or 2 buckets of warm water (i found 2 needed for hair washing otherwise 1 sufficient) the pump goes into the water, you press a button and hey presto! a most lovely hand held shower, it is bliss!!  I found it great in the sun, now the weather is turning a little chilly, I use the shelter of the garage. This won't suit everyone, I know, but wow.....what a difference to me. (my friend has also bought one, she fell off her horse and broke her pelvis in 3 places) and she sat out on her decking.

Good luck,

Jackie xx

HI Jackie that sounds like a brilliant idea and wouldnt go to waste after as my husband is a keen fisherman who does weekends away will definatlley look into getting one thankyou for the tip and good luck going forward in your recovery xx

I just hate the fact I'm going to be stuck indoors for weeks 😏 and not able to do what I normally would....i can't sit on my sofas because I can't get up so im stuck with this rock hard chair...im waiting delivery of a electric recliner chair ...i cannot wait 😁 I get no rest in bed despite buying an expensive memory foam topper..( if my husband asks it was £40 in the sale) 😂 thing that gets me down is I'm going the all this....then ive to do it all again in 3 months 😌....ive got arthritis in my back and they say it could make it worse when I get my hips done 😌....its hard when I've been a nurse for 22 years and I will never get back to doing my job! 😏 hope your all feeling better soon xx
