Keep ovaries for def if poss ,otherwise straight into menopause.. I'm 2 and half weeks into tah with a keyhole surgery ..I've got ovaries but all else gone ..best thing I've done and i!m sailing through it thankfully and back to normal really I had a 10 cm mate too x
HI TERESA
I TOO HAD SEVERAL FIBROIDS... ONE BEING A LIL' OVER 4 LBS! MY DR. DID NOT DO THE INJECTIONS, SHE WANTED THAT OUT A.SA.P.
THE LARGEST FIBROID WAS ATTACHED TO AN OVARY, UTERUS... THAT ALL HAD TO GO..
BUT.... SHE "DID" LEAVE ONE OVARY! SHE TOLD ME THAT "ONE" ACTS LIKE TWO! AND YOU WON'T GO INTO MENAPAUSE! I AM 52. I HAVE NO SYMPTOMS AFTER THE OP!
ALSO... MY DR. SAID ITS A GOOD THING TO GO AHEAD AND REMOVE... BUT SHE DID SAY THAT YOU "CAN" GET UTERAN CANCER WITHOUT THE UTERUS... GO FIGURE?!?! HERE I THOUGHT I WOULD NOT BE NEEDING ANY MORE OBGYN VISITS, LOL... STILL HAVE TO!
BUT I GUESS ITS BETTER TO TAKE OUT ALL TOGETHER NOW, THAN HAVING AN ISSUE DOWN THE ROAD, AND DOING ANOTHER OP, MORE SCAR TISSUE.
I AM NOW 11 WEEKS POST... HAD 22 STAPLES DOWN THE BELLY.. ITS A PRETTY THICK CORD LIKE FEELING SCAR, SHE SAID IT WILL GO DOWN MUCH LATER TO A THIN RED LINE.
TRY TO LEAVE AN OVARY... ITS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH, AS A WOMAN... IF YOU CAN
ALL THE BEST! KEEP US POSTED GIRL
Thanks for the advice.Unfortunately my op will not be key hole because of the size of the fibroid.
love
Teresa
Hello Mintdream,
Thanks for the adviceI am new to this site and still have to wait until April 7th to have ny op so i want to collect as much info as possible.
Thanks
Teresa
Hi im three weeks post op had keyhole sailed through op I also had fibroids all l can say to you is that it's not as bad as you might think follow all the instructions from nurses plenty of rest keep up with yr pain relief even if you don't have pain best to prevent it I was told and does work keep your wound covered don't be tempted to keep changing your dressing because the more you change it the more chance of infection take stool softeners so you don'tgget constipated drink plenty of water and if you feel something is not right get straight on to the doctors to sort asap mines must be sick of me I've been on two lots of antibiotics for water infection that was worse than the op so don't delay if you think you have one better to be safe than sorry btw l kept my ovaries better in the long run unless there is a risk of cancer good luck and remember it won't last forever and also no more miserable mths of bleeding xx
Thanks Linda, keep the advice coming please.

Well... you will definately get a lot of advice here... and make MANY new friends
Hi Teresa
I notice you are on Zoladex but don't mention if you are also on HRT
I only mention it as i was put into a false menopause for 6 months using Zoladex and HRT to ease severe pain following a failed ablation. When this cured all my problems overnight i was told i could only stay on Zoladex for six months and would then have a TAH with BSO so basically removing everything, as if they left my ovaries the pain could still be there after the hysterectomy 😞I only mention this as i am still taking the HRT and am doing absolutely fine two weeks post op and seeing as i was going to loose my very enlarged uterus, cervix and tubes i did not want to keep the ovaries only to face possibly having to have them removed at a later date. Mind you it wasn't really an option in my case as my consultant said he was going to remove my ovaries.I am not saying for one minute that this is what you should do as our reasons for needing this op are completely different but what i am suggesting is this is something you really need to discuss with your consultant pre op as they do not take things out without good reason.
Good luck
Sharon 😊
Hi Teresa,
I am 13 days post op Total Andominal Hyserectomy (TAH) with removal of both tubes, cervix and my right ovary.
Spent 3 nights in hospital, I had a large growth inside my ovary. still waiting pathology report.
I don't remember much of the first day other then the nurses trying to get me up and walking and I passed out on them.
By day 2 I had gotten up and took a shower. (Still on morphine and Percocet for pain management)
It was excruciating to get my legs in and out of bed but walking short distances felt ok.
I must admit it was very difficult to do this when I got home especially thru the night.
By day 5 I had my first BM, and it was like horrible labor pains. Long deep controlled breaths helped and once I went I did feel a lot better. I was off all pain med's by day 6 (by choice because I have IBS) and getting in and out of bed was a lot easier. The swelling went down quite a bit.
I did have horrible night sweats the first week often waking up soaked, I think this is just your body in shock after such a major surgery.
It's now 2 weeks post op and I am able to shuffle along pretty good, tho I make sure to nap once a day.
The BM pain is still pretty bad, but the relief is worth the pain.
Prior to my surgery, I am very healthy in regards to what I eat. I am an avid jogger of 3 miles 4 times a week and yoga 5 times a week.
I highly recommend doing some upper body strength building as you use your arms a lot to get up and down. The best underwear seem to be my husbands boxer breifs.
Hi Sharon,
No I am not in HRT and at the moment I haven't had any real problems apart from a very heavy period a week ago and some headaches in the last couple of days.I am due to have my 2nd injection next Mon so I hope that I don't suffer any worse than I have already.

Hi Dawn,
Did you have an epidural and also have you got stairs and if so how do you manage? What can you carry the first 2/3 weeks? Do you lose your appetite aswell, smaller portions are probably better

Hello
I had the general anastesia, tho I was offered the epidural.
I did do stairs by day 3 as my youngest really wanted me to tuck him in. I found stairs a lot easier then I anticipated. Caused no pain difference then walking.
I forgot to mention I only had the tiniest bit of spotting on the first and second day.
I did not have any kind of appetit til day 3, maybe it was the hospital food and medication. But when my husban came to pick me up (a four hour truck ride home) I was able to eat a kids meal as I was really craving some French fries.
I was told to carry no more then 10lbs- which is comparable to a 4litre jug of milk for the first few weeks. It's easier to carry any items if your able to pick them up from waist height.
I went to the store with my husband yesterday and found it difficult to even pull or push a store door open.
Today is post op 2 weeks, I'm able to get in and out of bed with little pain.
I am finding it painful to cough, sneeze, and laugh- but as long as I give support to my stomach these task are getting easier. As for the bowel movements, I am hoping the pain gets better soon. I drink lots of water (I am not constipated at all).
I was able to shave my legs in the shower today!! And the scab from the incision is healing up nice.
I'm still not taking any kind of medication, but I have been icing my abdomin daily since day one!!
I found this to really ease the pain and swelly belly.
I highly recommend using ice within the first few hours of surgery.
i hope my info helps with asking the right questions and aides in a speedy recovery.
Take care
Dawn
