Due to have my left hip replaced & after 3 TKR's in 3 years to say I'm anxious would be an understatement, after reading some of the comments I must admit I'm not filled with confidence about the procedure? I know a few people that have had a positive result after having this procedure, but also a few people that are still experiencing major problems after quite a long period, unfortunately I think I'm feeling negative due to all the problems I've had with the knees in the past 4 years (7 major surgeries & still in extereme pain 😭 hope I have more luck with this op?
Tom, what led you to so many surgeries, if I may ask? I would think you would be the pro and dishing out advice to us waiting for THR...I go in Tuesday morning for mine....so I'll let you know, if I'm up to it, a play by play before you go in!
I think it is like your knee replacements, sometimes it is the luck of the draw...in any event it seems like we are the mercy of our health systems (I'm in Canada), which can vary province to province, country to country...wishing your a speedy recovery, patricia
sorry to hear that, i think from what i know THR is an easier op, do you have a underlying problem as to why you have had so many? I am only 5 days post op and appart from being emotional i am doing ok. hope all goes well
I know the feeling Tom..as D-day approaches anxiety as to wether it will be successful starts to kick in.
I had my THR back in Feb and must admit up until 5wks ago I was sure something was amiss..but since then improvement has been slow but imprvement non the less.
Statistically hip replacements are more successful than knees and a potential life changer.
Providing you are reasonably healthy and have a good surgeon with a proven track record you should be fine.
Hope it goes well.
Hi Patricis, had left TKR in March 2010 which was totally unstable within a short space of time, then had my patella resurfaced to help try & stop the pain (which didn't help) then they suggested a poly liner change to make the joint more secure, again no joy? April 2012 I had revised left TKR with a totally different prosthesis which they told me would be virtually impossible to come loose (it has?) Oct 2012 I had right TKR which started off really well but again the joint bacame loose & very unstable, April 2013 I had ruptured tendon & quads which meant I couldn't lift my left leg off the floor, had that repaired successfully, Dec 2013 I had a poly liner change on the right knee to cure the instability (hasn't worked again) April 2014 x rays revealed severe osteoarthritis in both hips so due to go in next Friday for the left & if all goes well, back in within 3 months to have the right hip replaced? They will then see if the hip replacements will cure the pain in both knees, although the instability can't be cured without having both knees replaced yet again, if I'm pain free I'll seriously have to consider whether to just put up with loose knee joints & not go for anymore surgeries on my knees? My main concern is the surgeon doing my hips is the same guy that did my knees, scary or what? I've spoken to a few people @ the hip clinic who are more than pleased with their new hips, again all done by the same surgeon that's taking care of me (I hope?) hope all goes well with your op, let me know how you get on & good luck 😉
Thanks Tom, I'll keep you posted..it is nice to have someone to bounce concerns and issues off of!!! Hopefully I'll have a "good recovery"
Hi Lynn, think I must just be extremely unlucky, it was explained to me that 4% of people don't benefit in any way from having TKR 's either with pain relief or range of movement, it seems I fall into this category? It has been explained to me that this will be a simpler procedure than a TKR so I'm hoping it all goes well? Glad to hear your on the mend, even though it's early days, take your time & try not to overdo things, good luck & take care ☺
Hi Paulus, glad to hear your improving with time, I'm 57 now & just hope my quality of life will improve after these next 2 procedures & then I'll have a good think about where I go next with the dodgy knees? Thanks for your comment & taking time to reply, good luck with your recovery 😉
Hello Tom,
i had my left hip done March 2014 so it is about 19 weeks and i am now completely recovered. We all recover a little differently. Many of us did great up until 4-6 weeks and then relapsed and had to slow down for a few weeks. My step back was due to over confidence in the exercise area. If all goes well with your surgery and it will i am sue, there is no reason why you should not have a normal recovery. Just do your daily exercises, do not overdo
Hi, glad to hear it's all gone so well for you & your recovery is complete in only 19 weeks ☺ I'm hoping all goes well with my surgery & I can put a post up on this forum to let everyone know how good a new hip can feel? I've always religiously stuck to my excercise programmes after my previous surgeries & would always recommend to everyone they do the same, even though the pain can sometimes make you think twice about sticking to it, nice to read something posotive, thanks
Hey Lynne, great to hear from you !!!! Any idea why you are emotional or is it just sheer relief that its all over ? How are you doing getting in and out of bed now ? Any easier ? A lot of the carers I work with say being emotional is just the body's release valve, so no worries. Keep us all posted on how you are coming along. Love and hugs to you Maggie xxxxx
Hi Tom, statistically hips are far far more successful than knees, often in my work I've seen knees improve dramatically once the hip has been done. Keeping ny fingers crossed for you. Good luck with it. Let us all know how you get on. Maggie xxxx
Hi Maggie, I think its a mixture of being 60 miles away from were I live, not being able to speak french, the fodd is awful so not eating, Hubby had to leave tonight and wont be back unti the weekend, I feel sick all the time, the list goes on. its having to rely on others for everythng, I am usually quite independant, so lots of things and maybe i just wasnt prepared. I can manage to get out of bed and back in but its an effort, having to think all the time about doing things.. promise moan over now,,, I bet you wished you had never asked...lol. Thank you for the hugs, it means alot when you feel like this...xxxx
Hi Maggie, thanx 4 that as it's good to hear 😉 my sister works for a private fizio/chiropractor clinic & she's told me the very same thing, says she sees it all the time where people come in with knee problems & it turns out to be hip related (just wish my surgeon had thought along the same line b4 now?) the arthritis in my hips was only diagnosed after the company I work for sent me 4 a 2nd opinion with a BUPA guy, in the past 4 yrs I've never had my hips or pelvis x rayed by the current surgeon I have & now all of a sudden he's rushed everything thru 4 me 2 have my hips done, very strange?? Thanx 4 ur kind comments & I'll keep you updated as it all goes along 😃
I'm now 2 1/2 weeks post LTHR. I have had a positive experience and realise I'm lucky. My legs were very obviously different lengths and now they are the same. I've had very little pain since the operation but I've had the usual problems - swelling, muscle spasms at night, sleepless nights due to having to sleep on my back. I listen to my body and if it says stop doing something I stop and I am following all the advice given by doctors, nurses and the physios. One tip is to rest for at least an hour during the day - switch off phones and lock the door - and if help is offered take it. I hope all goes well for you and remember everyone is different with regard to recovery so take baby steps and you will know when you are ready to do more.
Hi, I'm really pleased to hear you've had such a positive experience & by all accounts a successful surgery ☺ I'll take all your advice on board & hope you continue to have a great recovery, good luck
Wow, your poor knees have really been through it, haven't they? I hope the hip replacement goes well and helps to sort out the knee pains. as others have posted, it is a much less complicated joint so the procedure is simpler, and hopefully the recovery will be too. Them bones is all connected, after all, aren't they?
Hi tom I've had both my hips replaced with ceramic and titanium
the first in 2001 the second in 2002 six months later. I have to say they have
both been very successful I've had no pain whatsoever recovery took a littile
longer for me as it was both hips but it changed my life to being pain free and mobile
again.
hope this helps good luck Ann
Hi Ann, thanx 4 that...good 2 hear some success stories along the way..don't think the hospital I'm under use the ceramic joints? Think it's stainless steel & plastic, I should be back in within 3 months 2 have the right hip done if all goes well (I'm sure it will?) really pleased you've had such a posotive result, restores my faith a bit, just can't wait to walk without pain & stand up straight after all this time, take care & thanx again ☺
Hi Jean, just looking forward to being pain free, hopefully with the knees as well? Think I could cope with the dodgy knees if the pain was gone? Don't think my surgeon has ever that old song, mind you if he had of done he might have checked other avenues a while ago instead of leaving it to another consultant to diagnose my hip problem? Sorry if I sound a little bitter about all this, but my jobs now on the line due to all the time I've had off in the past 4 years 😞 thanx 4 your comment, take care
