Hi everyone. I'm having my hemorrhoidectomy on 6th March. I have a stage 4 prolapse they are removing and several inside they plan to stitch to cut off their blood supply. I've looked at all the posts but wondered if anyone had internal and external hemorrhoids surgery like I'm having and could tell me if that makes the pain worse.
Hey,
I did - about 8-9 months back now and after reading lots of reports on how horrendous the recovery was, I was pretty scared. Mainly internal hems and some prolapsing tissue. Had a thrombosed hem cut off, too.
For me the post op recovery was fine. I didn't have much pain considering what others experienced and I was back to normal life in around 3/4 weeks.
The worst thing I experienced was that after the op, my bladder went to 'sleep' - meaning that although I REALLY needed the toilet, I couldn't urinate. The discomfort was so bad that I went to A+E. Luckily, however, I managed to urinate whilst there which stopped the pain.
Passing stool afer was strange as when wiping my bum felt completely different! I had a few times when it hurt (about a 6/7 out of 10) but other than that it was ok.
Good luck and hope all goes well!
Thank you Tom038219. Did you have stitches or an open wound on the prolapse? Also did you use numbing cream if your wound was left open? I'm worried about making things worse rather than better
Sorry Tim not Tom. Sorry
I just had this surgery Jan 26th. Get your bowel movements soft before surgery and keep them soft after surgery. Bowel movements are very painful even when they are soft.
Do sitz baths two to 3 times per day. I am alternating sitz baths and ice packs still to help minimize discomfort and swelling.
Avoid straining and avoid sitting on toilet for very long because it makes the area more painful.
Drink lots of liquids (mainly water) and keep stool softeners and milk of magnesia going for first week or two.
Be prepared for first bowel movement being very painful.
I had both stitches and open wounds. I just got numbing cream yesterday and it did help make my bottom more comfortable.
Thanks Kathy. I've started to watch my diet and I'm going to cut out the coffee and start drinking warm flavoured water instead. How was your pain and what type of hemorrhoids did you have x
As silly as it sounds, I'm struggling to remember! I didn't go back to have any stitches removed, so I'm assuming it was left open, but I could be wrong as the stitches may have dropped out or they could have removed them when I went back for a check up.
Keeping your stools soft, don't over-wipe after visiting the toilet and sitting in baths will really help.
After a stingy toilet visit, bath time was an absolute treat!
Thanks Kathy
Thanks Tim.
