Im a 29 year old male, been struggling with anxiety since I can remember. As of lately(three months) I've consistently have had palpitations every day and night. My heart feels like it pauses, then thuds or jumps extra hard, or is flopping around, which in turn makes the anxiety worse. I've had them before but they usually go away on their own. However, since they are so frequent ,i probably have 100 to 500 episodes a day, I've become quit concerned. I've had bloodwork, several chest xrays, several ekgs, and three holter monitors tests, all came back benign. My family isn't so supportive which is why i have reached out to this forum. I was an avid weight lifter until having these palpitations, now I am afraid to push myself physically or my heart will give out. It's very disabling.
Darren this is quite common. There’s plenty of content on youtube pertaining to this as one of the frightening symptoms. If they were harmful, I wouldn’t be here as I’ve had them for the past 20+ yrs, I’m 44 now. Some are just frightening I know, to where it feels like your heart stops suddenly with a thud…then back to beating again.
With regard to pushing yourself physically don’t be concerned. I’ll run excessively to the point of complete exhaustion. I’ll even feel palpitations in doing so, never had an issue.
It appears it’s anxiety, but only you know. Whatever the case might be you’ll need to face whatever is causing it. Easier said than done, but avoidance and denial only make it worse. Anyway, good luck.
Thank you for the feedback, I enjoy exercise as it’s how i deal with my anxiety and stress, so in not working out it has seemed to aggravate the issue.
I’m sorry you have had to deal with this condition for so long.
It’s come and go through the years and will I take proper actions it wasn’t noticed, but I’m a creature of habit despite better judgement. They’re no longer frightening and in fact the fear of having them or went early on. Unfortunately, worry and stress are unavoidable it seems, palpitations being one of the many byproducts.
Have you tried implementing more cardio into your routine? This helped me much more than just weight lifting alone. In fact cardio was my go to to reduce stress.
It’s come and gone through the years and when I took*
I haven’t done any form of cardio in quite a few years. I was in fear the energy I expended running or what it may be, would take away from my strength lifting weights. I may have to start running again as you mention, as there are more important things than lifting heavy weights like keeping your heart healthy.
I do have a bit of a fear in getting my heart rate up too high as I associate it with prior anxiety attacks or episodes but it’s not doing my heart any good by avoiding running, I would imagine.
I presume I worry having the skipped beats while having heart rate up high.
