Hey
I'm pretty much the same. I'm 18 and my periods have always been heavy, I don't think I've known a light period in my life. I am anemic, have been for a few years now but only recently discovered last year when I almost fainted at work. My haemoglobin count was 5 last year, and the average count for women is around 12 or 13.
My doc has put me on the pill for the time being, I don't think she really knows the real problem, I think I've been to ashamed to say, but I'm possitive that Menorrhagia is my problem
Anni,
You are certainly not alone, i'm now 21 and have had extreamly heavy periods since i was 12. I thought exactly the same when i was your age, too embaressed to go to the doctors i put up with periods so heavy that i would wear the largest tampons on the market and a pad that is supposed to last all night and have to change both every twenty minutes as i would have leaked onto my clothes after half an hour, this would go on for 2-3 weeks every month. I too became anaemic so badly that i was passing out everywhere!! My family amd friends didn't really understand, there's no problems like this in my family and my two best friends bed for 2 days of every month and sometimes didn't even need to change a tampon more than twice a day, so i always felt that i was the only one going through this and that there must be something wrong with me 'down there.
When i finaly went to the doctor i too don't think she really understood how heavy and painful they were but i was put on the EVRA patch (contraceptive patch) which really helped with the pain and my periods became at least manageable. So give the pill a chance and get on some iron tablets too.
Recently my periods have got a lot worse than ever, it hasn't stappd for over 4 months now and is as heavy as it was when i was younger. My doctor was less than approachable and implied that i had caught an STI, negative swabs proved i hadn't but now she seems stumped and just keeps putting me on different versions of the pill and has done more swabs and things but i feel that she keeps fobbing me off as needing to put up with it.
I'm doing a very demanding university course and i have two part time jobs, i have fantastic colleagues and bosses but it can't go on like this as i feel so ill all the time.
If anyone has got any advice please let me know as after getting everything manageable for a few years i feel like all i'm doing is regressing.
thanks
