heavy periods

my bleeding nightmare began 5 years ago after the birth of my 3rd child the birth itself was normal and i felt fine until 7 days after the birth when i started what i thought was heomoraging the blood loss was like nothing id ever seen when i got to the hospital the flow had almost stopped, i had a swab and was sent home. the test results came back fine and there was no infection. then after that my periods started to get very heavy and lasting upto 10 days. iwent on to have another 2 children and even though i prepared myself and had total bed rest exactley 7 days after the births the severe bleeding happend again and lasted 6 weeks. since then my periods are a living nightmare and im scared to move while in on incase of embarrassing leaking. i use the best brand of night time towel and still need to change it every hour. my doctor now prescribes tranexamic acid which does help but other than that they dont seem too bothered by the cause of this. im only 29 and it is ruining my life, is there anyone else out there that has experienced this nightmare and can anyone please help?!!

I too have suffered from heavy periods. To the point were I was using the largest tampon and also wearing a santary towel. Changing more or less every hour and also losing clots. My Doctor first prescribed Tranexamic tablets with Mefenamic acid tablets but it was to the point were I was popping a lot of pills. Then my Doctor said maybe I should try the Merina coil as this is supposed to make periods a lot lighter or vanish them altogether. After suffering heaving periods I thought this would be bliss. So in July 08 it was fitted and today 25 March 09 I have had it removed. At first it wasn't too bad I bled quite lightly but for a long time. Then I would have more or less 2 periods in one month lastings for about 10 days each and this month I don't think I have actually stopped bleeding. Even though the bleeding is lighter I had to decide whether it was worth it. My choice seems to be that either I have a very heavy period for 5 - 6 days each month or a bleed constantly but light.

I am 42 and have 2 children

Hi Sarahg,

I can imagine what your going through, i have been experiencing heavy bleeding for the past 9years.

I'll tell you my recent experience... my period started 28th November 2008, as usual i took tranexamic acid after 7days of my period but it made no difference. I was losing big chunks of bloodclots and i was in a lot of pain, i couldn't stop crying i couldn't even move. I went to A&E and i was seen by a geanycologist who prescribed Mefenamic acid and asked to take it with Tanexamic acid, i did as i was told but nothing worked... in between i went to A&E 4 times and to my GP 3 times.

I was addmitted to the hospital on February 09 and i was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism which was caused by Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid.

My period continued... finally i was prescribed Norethisterone, which has helped my period. My period stopped on monday 23rd March 09.

Ask your doctor for Norethisterone, because tranexamic and Mefenamic acid can cause bloodclots in your lungs.

Try and use TENA PANTS, they protect you from embarassing leakages.

I hope you find this information useful.

I am 33yrs old and have one child who is 3yrs old. I started having really heavy periods about 1yr ago. I end up changing a super plus tampon every 1-1:30mins at the moment for about 2 days. As you all probably know loosing this much blood is very draining to say the least. I get a lot of clots as well. The doc has put me on Tranexamic, but I am worried about using they every month as I have heard about people having problems with them when they are taking them regularly. I get a lot of cramp as well but it is mostly the heavyness of my periods and being run down by it that is getting to me.
