I'm 25 weeks down the line had a few hiccups but feel like I have now turned a corner😃 back to work and enjoying it, also exercising in the swimming pool is helping with my recovery, just one problem though I tend to get a burning on my hip area now and then, not all the time probably when i think I've done too much, did discuss this with the physio a few weeks ago who said it was something to do with the surgeon cutting through the capsule that surrounds the hip joint and then the repair after the new hip is in place. My question is does anybody else experience this burn ? And if so how long does it go on for? I feel like I'm moaning about something and nothing as some of you guys on here have worse problems than this but would be grateful for your input. The forum has been a massive help to me from having my op last October to know
Thanks
Vicki xxxx
Hi Victoria ,
I am 7 weeks post op and have same sort of thing , burning feeling on new hip .
I start physio next week as I also have a limp when I don't use a crutch .
hope they can sort it out . Take care
Mary
Hi Vicki, what limitations do you have if any did the doctor say?
Hi Mary
When speaking to the physio she was a bit flippant about it saying it was everything knitting together and nothing to be concerned about just wondering when it goes away, good luck Mary I've felt my surgery was very successful and am really pleased I had it done. Would you mention it at your physio appointment and see if you get a similar reply☺️
Hi Jimmy being 6 months down the line, I can virtually do most things I did before my op, so the limitations now are minimal. I still do get very tired quickly, no stamina but apparently that will come back and could take up to 18 months so my consultant informed me last week. Apparently when you are a younger hippy(I'm 54) you expect more of your body than a person that is older, and not expecting to go back to work or resume exercising so I was informed by the physio (sounds a bit agest to me) as there are plenty of older people out there that a very physically fit 60 being the new 50 and all that
Regards Vicki
I need THR and I climb and crawl and kneel, squat and bend. on ladders in my job contsruction will this be a problem ??
Hi think you should ask consultant about that as there seems to be loypts of things in that list that we are not supposed to do.
Good luck
I think you raise interesting and troubling points. At 18 months I have NEVER regained that all embracing description, "stamina". I'm sure you hit the nail on the head: if you are a sporty 60 say, as I was, the shock of this overwhelming tiredness is depressing. For me, it can be merely that getting out of bed and psychologically knowing the feeling of heaviness, leaden and lumpen, that will be with me. There was no more lightness of foot. Yes, I'm back at yoga , Pilates and sort of tennis, but only on painkillers. I refer to it as being a shadow of my former self. When you think of that stem of metal replacing all that bone and marrow, the very foreign object, the sheer size and composition of it, and the trauma to all those cut and stretched tissues (over stretched in cases of a too big prosthesis)it is hardly surprising. When I read of you all with pain in all its manifestations, I can only say "what on earth else could we have expected"!! Pain free? I don't think so. I would be pain free if I spent the rest of my life in bed, and in truth, I do now spend up to 14 hours a day in bed so that I can be actively functioning when I'm up. It feels like chronic fatigue. I embrace it and REST A LOT. And yes it still hurts under the scar and like there's a foreign body pushing in there, which of course, there is! But hey my grandma was dead at my age!
Hi , have you felt like this from the beginning ?
Eventually Jimmy im sure you will get there but don't expect to be as strong as you were before, I know I'm only 6 months post op but im as weak as a kitten, just carrying shopping bags knackers me out, I actually feel a bit pathetic sometimes but everybody is always telling me it's early days😁 I think I'm a little impatient also.
Hi jimmy, you should be able to do all that with caution. I'm a carpenter local 157.
I'm 6 months post op lifting drywall and doing tops, climb up and ladders kneel for panel and threshold installation etc.
Hi Victoria, I am 22 weeks tomorrow for my right THR and 14 weeks tomorrow for my left THR. I find the right hip still sometimes a little sore and burning ( especially if I have pushed too much !!!). I am not back to work yet but am hopeful that within the next 4 or 5 weeks I will be ready. My physio and surgeon both say that although outwardly you look healed, it can take from a year to eighteen months to fully heal properly. Try to keep up the exercise, but try not to overdo things. A difficult balance to strike I know !!!!! Hopefully the pains will ease soon letting you get back to full fitness. Good Luck. Maggie xx
Thanks Maggie I feel I lull myself into s false sense of security thinking 'I'm feeling great' then probably go a bit mad in the pool then suffer, and it's where's the painkillers again!!! I must take it easier 😁 xxx
Thanks Teamster here NYC, I climb a lot in ceilings and I was just wondering if I'll be able to do my job.
Well written and congratulations ! It is a major operation and I think sometimes we expect too much. Be thankful for the extra things you can do again but do not expect to ever be 100% perfect again like a lucky 21 year old.
Enjoy the life you can lead and be thankful for this extension of movement you have been granted.
Your positive message is a truth we all need to remember. I wish you well.
Hi Victoria,
I am 5 weeks post op and I true have this burning feeling which happens after I exercise the hip, I have been to see the physio today who has given me exercises to do and said that this would result in burning and said that the scar needs massaging after exercise, so this might be something to try. I do use vitamin e oil to massage in, a friend told me about the oil. Hope that this helps. How long hav eyou been swimming for as im looking forward to starting back.
You will be able to do your job. Just take it easy as you do your job. I went back to work 4 months post op.
Always remember precautions. You know jobsite has a lot of clusters easy to trip and fall. You'll be alright.
I'm in Far Rock area.
Hi Victoria19887,
I'm new here but wish I would have found this site ages ago as it's been so reassuring and helpful.
Before my THR I had problems with my bursa (sp?) sack which sits on the outer part of your hip and can burn in the same area. It gets sore because the band of muscle which runs from your knee to your hip can get very tight (especially with a lot of the exercises us hipsters do) and causes pressure on this fluid filled sack.
You might want to try a foam roller to release this muscle and therefore allieviate the burning & soreness. (Obviously stay away from your wound if you're still sore there or in early days of recovery - use caution and common sense!)
Obviously it could still be healing as other physios have suggested, but you might want to give this a try as it's a very quick fix to a fairly simple problem.
hope this helps, good luck. x
