Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!
Jenny. I found that I had some pain occurring after a few weeks. But I use the term pain with caution as it was more discomfort and I just took paracetamol or ibuprofen to help ease this. I experienced some tightness and slight burning and occasional twitching ( in the hammertoe) at around 5/6 weeks. But this eventually disappeared and once the K-wire was removed things settled down. My worst time was about 3 weeks ago ( when I was 12 weeks post op) and I got the most awful discomfort and tenderness running along the outer part and top of the foot which extends from the ligaments that run from the 3rd, 4th and little toes. It was unbearable for about 4 days and I wondered what on earth was happening to me. I spoke to my very good nurse friend and we both came to the conclusion that as I was now beginning to adopt a more normal walking position after having had the foot bandaged for 6 weeks with very limited mobility the ligaments and tendons were now back in use and having to re- establish their rightful job and function. All this has now subsided and all that discomfort has disappeared. It was strange that neither my big toe or the 2nd toe were unaffected by this sudden discomfort. I just mention all this in case you experience anything similar. I treated it with ice packs and gentle massage with ordinary foot lotion which seemed to help ease things. I am also 63 years old. Thank you all so much! Gillian, I am thinking that the burning and pain is probably from nerves and tissue regenerating? I just pray I didn't mess anything up with falling on it a second time. First time I was on a walker and it tipped over. Second time I got the wheel of the knee walker caught on something and I went right over it. It's pretty funny now when I picture it..lol Thanks so much for the info!! Bob, the surgery was actually very easy. I had general anesthesia because the surgery took so long. I wasn't thrilled about that but now, I'm glad I did. Just remember to keep that foot elevated and ice it. That is the key to very little post op pain! Good luck!
Hi, I had my op 13th March,so am now 5days post op. Had my left foot done. My dressing was changed yesterday and I was amazed that for the first time in years there was no bump to be seen (was a bit emotional with the results). I'm experiencing very strong pain across the top of my foot,almost like a burning sensation. Got a post op shoe and crutches, but just can't seem to put any weight on my heel.
How long have others waited before trying to put weight on your heel?
Good luck Bob, let me know how you make out today. Sending positive thoughts to you. I go in on March 28th. I have been trying to prepare myself and my husband for what life will be like. I am going to start preparing meals for the freezer as my husband is NOT a cook but he thinks he is?? I am so not looking forward to bonding with the couch. Jenny, I rented a knee scooter already as they are a hot item and they said if I take it right away it is mine or else risk not getting one. I am practising around the house with it. Not looking forward to sleeping on my back as I am a side sleeper but I guess I will have no choice. Do most of you sleep in your bed or the couch. I am getting a basket ready with all my things I want near by. This no weight bearing for 6 weeks is going to be really hard but I guess it will pass soon. At least summer will be here once I can walk again. Any thing other can tell me that I should prepare for please let me know. Happy healing to the rest of you.
Hi Anita, good luck for the 28th. You will be absolutely fine and sounds like you are doing all the right things. I sleep in my bed with my foot elevated on 2 pillows. I find I can lie on my left side with my right foot stretched out, probably not the easiest way of lying but seem to work for a few hours then I have to roll onto my back.
Carmen, I read that your dressings were removed. I am not scheduled to have mine removed for 3 weeks after surgery. That is a long time. Too long in my opinion. The stitches are coming out that day too. Do you use a recliner during the day?
Dressings removed!! I might be smug as little pain and no swelling or bruising but I have to put up with a plaster cast for 6 weeks!! am on my second after 12 days!! To take dressings off must be heaven!
No no...I think you have misread my post, dressings have only been changed😃 not removed. Still got another 2 weeks before next dressing change at hospital. Anita I use the sofa during the day with my foot elevated on two pillows and when necessary a pillow to support my back.

Thank goodness for Saint Annette we were worried you were on your own. My St Michael has been marvellous but even he became less saint like after a week but fine after a night out with the lads. THis time tomorrow will be all done and you will be high as a kite - enjoy x
Ya, my husband still thinks I will be up and around in a week. Says I wont be able to stand to sit or be off my feet for that long. Is he in for a surprise or what!! I plan on doing everything the surgeon tells me. Once he sees how long it really takes I am sure he wont be Saint...............lol. Anyway I have a week to go. I vacuumed all the living room, every corner so I feel better about that. I vacuum usually every 3rd day but I guess I will just have to let it go for a while and not look. My Saint isnt a cook so that is going to be hard.
He will go Ferrell and will learn as wont go hungry!! He will probably surprise you, mine has! One tip which I found useful - place a chair between the bed and the loo so you have a halfway stop and something to hang on to. Its only 6 paces to my loo but was I glad of that chair!!
Anita, glad you got your knee scooter already. Wish I had had one right from the beginning. Just be super careful as I got the wheels of mine tangled up and down I went right onto my operated on foot. Wasn't pleasant! Good luck with the surgery. Time goes pretty fast.
Carmen, I was emotional when I saw my foot also! The pure joy of that huge bump gone and toes so straight!
Jilly, lol..I have stools and chairs all over the house just for that purpose! I am still non-weight bearing so my good legs tires quickly and that mid-way chair is a God-send when I'm not on the scooter.
Jenny, the scooter is so popular here that if you dont get it when they have it you might not. Its a hot commodity. Is there a world wide sale on bunion removed?? lol I am actually glad I have it to try first before I really need it. I can see how much better it is then crutches.I will for sure do the chair stop on the way to the bathroom, great tip. I am taking the scooter when I get the surgery so I can get to the car after. I am already missing my bunion. My husband told me about a party we are invited to 2 weeks after surgery and there is no way I am going as we have stairs and the only reason I will be leaving is for a Doctors appointment. They are really hard to get up. They aren't the normal stairs they have a landing part way up and a corner, and that is what makes it hard. Anything else you can think of for me to prepare pre surgery?
You will be surprised Anita, I am 2 weeks tomorrow and in the last week I have been out with friends twice, gone to a food fair (in a wheelchair) for my business and been to the pub!! (last one was a bit much though!! If you are in England and/or having a general anaesthetic they will only allow you to go to the car in a wheelchair because you will be pretty Dopey. But you will have seen Doc, been Sleepy, felt Bashful at the gown you will have to wear,, hopefully not Sneezy, sometimes Grumpy and eventually Happy !! Good luck

Checkin in. Had 7 am surgery. It is now 2:45 EST. Home with foot elevated., ice. Still numb with zero pain. Waiting for it tho. No pain meds and hoping I can do it without them only because I got addicted to them after my hip replacement. We shall see how it goes. Have my girlfriend to monitor them. All in all I'm in good spirits. I believe I have surrendered to the fact I am on the couch for awhile so working out today or the next upcoming week is out of the question. ( Gym rat ). This is where I'm at and grateful for all the encouragement I've recieved from my bunion buddies. To all. stay positive and grateful for the little things and let"s stay off the pity pot. Taking it one day at a time. Love and prayers to all!!!!!. P.S. What is the next hurdle i'm facing?
