help cyst in my ovary

I've been extremely tired the last few months and had severe abdominal pain. I was referred by my doctor for a CT scan which showed a dilated kidney. I've had another CT scan today before sewing a kidney specialist , he told me I also have a cyst in my ovary. Now I'm starting to panic as I've been referred for an urgent CT scan and had blood tests. I've also become very bloated and gassy.

Hi Kerrie,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having so much pain and I'm sure this must be causing you a lot of worry. Don't panic! Whatever they've found, it's good they are dealing with it quickly. Cysts are common and usually harmless. I happen to have one at the moment that is over 8 inches across! That's obviously too big to leave in, so I'll need it to be removed and am looking at surgery etc, but most women who get cysts have them go away again naturally. Chances are that the cyst on your ovary is nothing to worry too much about. And you're in the right hands now, at least! Please try not to worry. Keep us posted. xx

Thanks pam , it's panicked me a tad with all the symptoms I thought may have been my kidney have got me thinking . Will do :-)

Hi Pam

I am lying here at the moment so uncomfortable, I cannot believe you still have one that size and it's not been removed ? I go for scan in 2 weeks and I want it out if there's any! I am tempted to go to A and E because at least they'd have to do something:-(

I don't know how common a symptom this is, but I was told after my ultrasound that they could see some inflamation on my kidney, which they blame entirely on it getting squished a bit my the cyst! I'm not saying that's what's happening to you, I've no idea, but the ovaries and kidneys (and all our organs, really) aren't that far apart physically, so it's quite possible for an issue with one to cause symptoms in another. The scans and tests will give them a much better idea. Try to stay calm and let them figure it out. smile xx

Oh ashlee I'm so sorry you're in so much pain! I've been fairly lucky (in some ways) that although my cyst is massive (melon sized) it is filled with liquid ("mucous"wink and doesn't seem to be very attached to other things ("mobile"wink so my body is fitting it in without loads of pain.  I have my period today though and it's pretty sore. And I am getting BIG. Which is horrible, I look 6 months pregnant but I'm not. sad I'm not going to go to A&E or anything, but I will put pressure on my GP and specialist doc to see if they can get me seen any sooner. I think everyone's cysts and experiences of pain seem to vary a lot.  Good luck with your scan!

I had a 7 cm cyst on my left ovary and a 4 cm on right and a complex cyst on kidney. I just had surgery about 6 was ago on left had full ovary removed. I still have cyst on right and kidney. Most are benign and the problems they tend to cause is pain. It is normal for our body to develop cyst the rule you can hear is 5 cysts by fifty. Most of the time the reabsorb and go away some of us have the fun of the pain and need to have removed. My surgery was emergency surgery because of the size it grew and pain and problems it caused. My surgery had some problems I had a bleed following and my incision reopened and dr had hard time getting ovary out because so large. But most have a fairly easy recovery. I wish you the best and hopefully they get it taken care of and you can go on with every day life.

Hi Kerrie, waiting is worrying but your in the system and they will sort out whatever is going on! Try to keep your chin up. My CT is tomorrow and I to am worried but knowledge is power and then get a plan of action! Good luck x

Hope all goes well Jane , that's very true at least anything that comes out of the tests is alot more than we would have known. Fingers crossed xxx

Good luck for your scan Jane, and keep us all posted!

Hi Jane you're so right. Once in the system it was 7 weeks from diagnosis( 2 ovarian cysts 5cm and 8cm) to hysterectomy(my choice) for me and everything was benign.I am now 4 weeks into recovery, feeling great and I couldn't have been better looked after. Our NHS is wonderful! Good luck tomorrow. The CT scan showed no spread in rest of body,no fluid in abdomen and the size of the cysts. Were your blood tests for CA 125 OK?x

I hope I get that option of diagnosed. Can I ask how old you are and what your symptoms were? X

I'm 29 , abdominal pain and lower back. Bloating of the stomach , blood in my urine and fatigue. I had two ultra sounds after Christmas and the cyst wasn't present but my kidney was dilated in both. Yesterday another ultra sound was done and the cyst was found and my kidney again dilated on the opposite side. I was given a cystocrapy to check my bladder etc but no stones or blockages were found. I've had a blood test Yesterday abd have been called for an urgent CT scan Friday xx

Poor you, do you get up to go to the loo? I get wakened wvery2/3 hrs and it feeks like I've held it all night! I feel totally drained and fed up. The nausea and gurgling indigestion doesn't help x

Yes I do , I also have to go about three times before I drift off. My stomach is disgusting, feels like it's constantly swishing x

Hi ashlee- I'm a fit and healthy 74 yr old- had no symptoms at all and haven't had any since. At my age that is often the case and ovarian cancer is often called the 'silent killer' Post menopausal women are at higher risk of ovarian cancer which is why I opted for hysterectomy- I took advice from a family member who is an oncologist. As it was everything was benign which might seem a waste of a major operation to some, but I don't regret it as I feel safer for the future and unlike younger ladies I don't need my 'bits' any more! x

Good luck for Friday kerrie. Keep us posted x

So , I've had my CT scan today and by the looks the radiographer says the cyst is blocking my urethra from my right kidney causing the urine to go back on its self and therefore causing damage to the kidney. Just have to wait for the specialist to call me back now with the full results .

Hi kerrie, i hope i can help. Im 32 mum of 4 youngest been 6 months. I have just had open surgery on wednesday 25th feb to remove dermoid cysts from bith ovaries.

I did lots of research to try and prepare myself.

I was most scrared of been put to sleep, didnt think pain would be a problem after having 4 babies.

All went well, was in theatre for 2 hours then recovery for a hour.

Woke up in masses amounts of pain, was given mophine which eased it. Slept on and off wednesday night. Was seen by my consultant following morning. My cysts had hair, bone and a couple of teeth! Yuck.

Im home not, unable to sleep any other way but upright in a chair because the pain is bad. Topping up pain relief every 4 hours. But i have no cysts and still have my ovaries thank god because that would of brought many more problems. I dont want to scare you in anyway im just trying to tell you my story. Everyday is better and for life without cyst symtons its going to be worth it. Worst thing for me is not been able to hold my baby or my 3 year old.

Depending on what type of cyst you have you may not need surgery. Unlucky for me mine was solid rather than fluid filled.

Good luck with whatever happens x

Thanks Esther , I'm not sure what mines made of. Hoping it's just a fluid one or something , it's appeared quite fast. It's agonyyyy , especially with the pain it's horrid. Shooting pains down my rectum and front , the blood in the urine etc I deffinately won't miss. And now it's extra worrying because it's squashing my kidney and stopping it working so I'm wondering how big it is. Ahhhh to be a woman hey , I also have a three year old little boy so I'm hoping it won't be major to take out :-( x
