HELP!! I’m scared to drive!!!

I’m 18 years old and don’t even have my liscense, everyone makes me feel bad about it because they find it hard to believe I don’t have it yet sad it makes me sad and lowers my confidence & I have my permit though but haven’t driven in a few months due to super bad anxiety and OCD but it’s gotten better with the medicene. I just worry about getting into a car crash and dying, people always tell me to drive defensley but I’m scared I’m not gonna know what to do and if I make the wrong choice. Anyone ever experience this or scared of driving? I mostly fear driving in crowded places with lots of cars and on highways and in cities ALSO ON BRIDGES!! I’m afraid I’m gonna lose control or something. Also usually it’s always the other persons fault who causes an accident, I’m a pretty good driver and I’m still learning but I’m just so scared of dying or getting in a car crash! Also another thing I fear is going the wrong way! please comment your advice and what has helped you & your experience

Hi Pink, I got my driver's license the day I turned sixteen. I am 55 years old now. I am still driving and I am still alive. You cannot live your life being fearful of what might happen. Get out there and enjoy life. Part of that enjoyment is driving...going places you want to go.

Hi, there. First of all, if you don't want to drive then you don't have to drive. I just got my permit 3 months ago and I just turned 23. I still deal with a lot of anxiety while driving, but it's something you get used to with time and practice. I limit my driving to only streets - I'm fearful of highways and bridges as well. Also, you're going to make mistakes while driving and there's nothing wrong with that. I make mistakes every time I get in the driver's seat, but I know it's only teaching me what to do or what not to do. Just take your time. There's no limit on when you HAVE to get your license. Best of luck!

Don't let other people get you down because you don't have your license yet. I went two years through college without my license. People would comment on it, but at the time I knew I was better off taking the bus. (Cars are also expensive and I couldn't afford it!) I only got my license when my family moved and public transportation was no longer an option. I, too, was scared. My dad tried teaching me, but since he wasn't a professional (and had an SUV), it wasn't working so well. My mom never learned how to drive.

Actually, the first time I tried to get my permit, I was pulling into our driveway which felt narrow to me in the SUV. Was about to hit the neighbors fence so I swerved right and meant to hit the brake, but I was nervous and hit the gas! Crashed into the electric meter and shattered the headlight. My parents weren't angry, but I bawled my eyes out.

When I finally worked up the courage to try to drive again, I hired an instructor. I knew I was safe because she had brakes on her side if the car as well. Eventually, I felt much more comfortable driving. I'm 28 and have been driving for....6 years I believe. I have not gotten into one accident! I have made some small mistakes here and there, but nothing that caused a collision or got me pulled over.

Moral of the story is, wait until you are ready, don't let anyone pressure you, and practice with whomever you are most comfortable with! You will get there!
