HELP!!!LUMBAR PUNCTURE-INTENSE BACK PAIN!!!

Hey, went to the ER w/ severe headache and fever. It took 4 x to get the LP done. Was discharged home about 12 hours after. 2 days later intense headache again, worse when I say or stood up etc. They decided it was a PDPH so they did a blood patch on Wed. During the blood patch he must've hit the nerve during the one of 5x he tried to get it situated to put the blood in because I got THE WORST shooting/electrical pain into my left groin/butt/thigh, I literally screamed so loud people came running. When he FINALLY was able to get situated he then injected the 20ccs of blood which ALSO caused A LOT of pain and pressure in my legs and back. Since then I have had the pain into my groin that has not gone away, a slight headache(but was manageable). Then I started getting this 'pulling' stiff type feeling when I would look down completely (chin to chest) in my low back, which in the last 10 hrs has gotten progressively worse with the head getting worse and now a temp between 38.4-39(orally).

Sorry for delay.

To me it sounds like they have damaged the nerve, I had similar 10 yrs ago but they caused damage to the nerve controlling legs and I lost all sensation, it took about 6 weeks in hospital for the pain and swelling to go so I could feel my legs. Re the headaches I would suggest you drink plenty of water and normal pain killers, if you go to GP they will probably send you back in and they will give you some blood tests might keep you in for I.v antibiotics and send you home. It's a really tricky one to actually get a right diagnosis. I'm sorry I can be much help but I think you will need time to get over the torture of lumber puncture. Please keep me updated and I so hope you get better soon

Hi there,

No..THANK YOU for the reply!! And allowing me to whine and complain!!

I am just sitting here waiting for the clock to hit 830 so I can make my way to the dr. I am overall just not feeling well. The fever won't go below 38.4 and I am taking 2 Percocet every 4 hours as well as 2 MotrinMax which is a 12 hr. I am even having a hard time writing these messages cuz I can't look down to my phone so I am holding it in the air so my neck stays straight....

Anyways, I will keep you posted as to what they say, pretty sure if I do end up back at the ER they will prolly think I'm bat-sh*t crazy!!! Which is WHY I am going to see my dr first so he can assess me and I trust his diagnosis highly!! So I know if he sends me then I NEED to be there!!

Thanks again for keeping in touch, it means a lot to be able to talk to people who may have some sort of an idea as to what I am going through!!

Take care, talk soon!!

Cheers🍀GC

Hi, I said a prayer for you.  I don't even know why you are messing with a GP. You need a neurologist ASAP!  Good luck. I am so so sorry you are going through such excruciating pain.  It will get better but it might take a while.

So glad you are getting some relief! The MRI will tell them what's going on.

Hello, how are you, did they find anything on the MRI?

George

I have discitis(sp) they have me on antibiotics and they are also doing an MRI of my brain today to make sure I'm not still leaking CSF fluid.....THANKS A TON for checking in!!

Keeping everything crossed that you get all clear. Please keep us updated xx

Update: on the MRI of my spine they found that I have discitis(sp). I am on IV antibiotics and they are also doing an MRI of my brain today to make sure I'm not still leaking CSF fluid.

Yikes, that is serious! I just googled that - it's very serious. But it says it can spontaneous resolve - especially in children under the age of 8.  Too bad you are not 7 years oldsurprised.  Hope yours clears up quickly.  So glad they found out what it is and you are being taken care of!

Cg,

Oh my!! I'm so glad you are now on the path of healing and glad with everyone's input you didn't wait any longer!! So happy that you are getting the treatment that you needed!!

Feel better!

And pls keep us all posted!

Hi celticgirl. When I read your post, the tesg that you had with the puncture is unbelievable. To have jr doctor do it is also a risk jn itself. The procedure in itself is risky because your spine is so intricate with all the nerves in various parts of the body to the brain controlling all motor functions. One slip can become a dangerous situation and can cause paralysis or even death. By having it done with a doctor who wants to have this procedure signed off and probably hasnt done ma y of them, than I know that is a major consideration to think about. But you had it done already and you suffered much having it. In my case, an attempt to have a spinal tap was a bad experience for me. It was to be done bt a radiologist. I would have thought it would be by an anesthesiologist. Most of them are also pain specialists. I thought my doctor who is also a pain specialist would have done it. After the xray and prep, deadening the area, the radiologist inserted the needle and I felt so much pressure, not pain that I moved. I couldnt help it. He warned me not to move or the needle can damage a nerve and possibly cause paralysis or even death. He was loud and perturbed when he told me this. He said he was finished and wont do it. I was being cgecked for RA and I wanted to have the procedure done to rule it out. I said that to do it agai but he was very hesitant do do so. Afterwards he gave in. Again I moved and he just threw up his hands in disgust and stopped. I also asked him if I can have it done by sedation. He wouldnt listen. I told my pain doc what happened and said he will ask for sedation. But the insurancd company denied it. So here it is not knowing. Some of these procedures have to be really thought out and you the patient has the lasf say in this. When this post was originally written, I dont know but I thought I would share. Thanks for reading.

I am writing again as I was following you and others in replying. You would think that a procedure like this wouldnt be messed up but from what I hear theee are repercussions. You had them and hospitalized for that. I hope you are better now so take care.

H> celtic girl.

I just want to tell you that that you have friends here like myself. You having all this pain is not really normal. Ending up in the hospital for this isnt normal. Obviously something went wrong. As the reply by another person said and forgive me if I cannot recall the at this time, get every medical record, notes, and any other documentation recorde and making your own comments and if you have to use it for legal purposes, then you will have the necessary documents to show a lawyer. They will determine if you have a case and do it on a contingency basis. Otherwise it is expensive if you have to pay. Hope this will give you some peace in mind and hope you will heal and feel better.

Mel,

So sorry you had to go through this.  I went through a spinal tap once, but I had a very good doctor and it was not a particularly painful experience. Which is how it should be!
