Hello - I would really appreciate any help at all as I am so low and fed up. I understand there are people on here in a far worse state than me and I am grateful to some extent but I can't carry on much longer feeling so poorly.
I am a 44 year old female with no illness history (lucky me - although of course I didn't realise how lucky I was). About six months ago I had a few bad bouts of diarrhea and then everything changed. Every morning from 4am to 6am I am awoken with an urgent need to go to the bathroom and experience an explosion of loose stools and mucus (sometimes liquid but only every week-ish). I feel like I have been turned inside out and just feel really, really ill. I then get up and force myself to go for a walk (advised) and this does help as I am sick of the sight of my bathroom. I take two codeine (15mg) and sometimes need to go to the toilet a few more times before heading to work.
Throughout the day (hoping noone will speak to me) I rarely need to go to the toilet again but feel like I could and I feel ill and have severe stomach pain. I am prescibed with Mebeverine which I am unsure helps or not. Once I get home I just need my bed.
I have been sent away by my consultant as 'only' having IBS after receiving every blood test available and a colonoscopy. My doctor is a little more understanding and sending me for some ovary scans as she is running out of ideas.
I have tried hypnotherpay; relexology; pro-biotics (really expensive ones); fibregel; anti-depressants; calcium tables and some food elimation.
Can it really be IBS if it occurs every day?
I am pretty sure it's not physcological as it wakes me up and it can happen on a Saturday morning when I have an easy day ahead as well as a Monday morning when I am concerned about getting to work.
I do worry a lot but have tried to remain as positive as I can, mainly for the sake of my husband and son and keeping my job. I do get very emotional and just want this to end as quickly as it came.
Can anyone help?
hi
sounds like you have had the tests but still struggling. what food elimination did you do?
I was diagnoised 23 years ago with IBS and struggled in a silimar way. I went to see the top bloke in bowel bits and he asked me to go gluten and dairy free for 2 weeks. its very very hard. I eliminated gluten only for 2 weeks and saw a massive change in my bowel. I then looked at dairy...its very odd I cant tolerance ice cream...I can have milk. I think its important to detox your body and eliminating gluten which is used as a filler in alot of foods (kellogs swear by it in ALL their cereals). but this gave me a starting point. I reintroduced some gluten and over the years have learned what food is just not worth it.....pies and pastry.
bread is a big demon....I only eat bread in very small quantities. its trial and error
one other little point....codeine is not good for the bowels it can suppress them. use imodium to stop the diarrhoea x
Looks you might have some kind of bacteria/bug ... but not sure.
Try Manuka Honey at least 200+ MGO - make sure is original.
+ do some scans for Pancreas maybe?it might be main cose of the problem
- if it turns it is Pancreas than you need to go on diet for as long as needed
to give it a time to heal from a week to few months...it is not that easy to
diagnose even if blood tests and Usg is ok - is is dangerous so better
make sure ....hope it can help you a bit
good luck!
Thank you for your quick reply; I am sorry to hear of your IBS struggles.
I haven't had any help with food elimation. I didn't eat any daity for the first three weeks and it made no difference. I have been tested for wheat intolerance. I was so so ill at one point I just stopped eating and I never want to feel that ill again; I was in bed for a week.
My consultant wrote on a big note that I must never take immodium and the doctor prescribed codeine!
There are so many conflicting ideas...
I would love to have some advice on food elimination and even have some testing....
Thank you for your quick reply.
I will ask about Pancreas - thank you.
Where can I get the honey from? xx
Thank you xxx - it feels good to talk. My husband must be sick to death of it and it affects his life as I won't go anywhere. xx
search on the web i guess - find closest place to where you leave
thats it
- just make sure it is original at least 200+ MGO or 15+ UMF
this is essential - with lowest index it just wont work.
You can browse information about it and believe me it works!
let know if any progress!
thank you so much - I will try it - I will try anything! x
Having diarrhoea in, what is effectively, the middle of the night COULD be Celiac Disease rather than IBS perhaps? I don't know a great deal about the subject but I think that is one of the symptoms... might be an idea to look at the information on this site about CD and see if it rings any bells. Gluten elimination might indicate one way or the other.
Thank you for your reply; I really appreciate any help I can get. I have been tested negative for Celiac but you are right a lot just doesn't point to IBS. Also, I haven't had 'bouts', just 'continual'.....
Thank you xx
Hi here, so sorry you are suffering, I can sympathise with a lot of what you say but can only say what has worked for me, Looking back I had put my problems down to stress and just thought I had a 'nervous' stomach and was eating badly because my doctor could not really find the cause either. I feel I was lucky as I found aloe drinking gel and have seen such a difference since taking a small 'shot' of the drink daily. I feel more energised too. The drinking gel I use )so called because it is has high aloe content) is not a high street brand though - but it is the best; I'd be happy to tell you more
Hello - thank you for your message - please tell mw more - anything to help xx
Hello,
I am a 20 year old female and i've had IBS symptoms for 8 months now and found Mebeverine did not help me so I am now on a trial period of Audmonal tablets which also are not working yet. I feel your frusteration I really do! I am also at the so so fed up of feeling in constant pain everyday and having a mixture of D and C on a daily basis. I am also having hypno at the moment for my anxiety and I do feel calmer and less stressed but it's not helping the physical symptoms - at the moment I feel as though i'm going to have to live with this for the rest of my life!
Have you tried crystallised ginger? I read that it's known to be good for digestive issues and I am having some daily and got it from Holland and Barrett _____ might be worth a try?
Also, why did your doctor tell you not to take Imodium? I take it when the Diarreha gets too bad.
I hope you get better soon! x

Hi there - I've ordered the strongest one from Ocado (£79.99) - not bothered about the cost if it works. I'll keep you posted. Thank you xxx
Hi Lauren
It means the world to me to speak to someone who finally understands. Although I can't bear to think of anyone else feeling like this especially you being so young.
Let's beat it together.
I saw a private consultant who told me quite categorically to not take immodium. I think he thought once I had been told it wasn't life threatening that I would get back to normal quickly. It would be better to not take any drugs but that's not possible.
It may not be life threatening but it's so debilitating.
I haven't tried the ginger, let me know how you get on.
I've just bought some Makuna honey to try so I'll let you how I get on with that.
Let me know how you get on with your new medication too.
I've taken pro-biotics but they haven't helped - have you tried them?
Have you had a colonoscopy and all the tests?
Have you tried food elimination?
I think relaxing does help, although easier said than done. I started going for a brisk walk every morning about 8 weeks ago and I love it. I actually forget about it when I'm walking - the only time I do.
Perhaps as we're both 'new' to these dreadful symptoms they will go as quickly as they came on. We have to remain positive.
I'll look forward to hearing from you - we can do this! xx
It will help at least to kill bad bacteria and IBS more less is bacteria overgrowth - you have to find the way
to use it - i was takin 3 tea spoons every morning just when i woke up
and drinking about 200 ml of water than just dont eat or drink anything
for 30-40 min - let Manuka work - than you can use it also eating with bread
just put 2-3 spoons on a piece of it and eat very slowly.
It is expensive that's true however compare to relief it gives price
is no matter - i got rid of 70% of this horrible anxiety within 2-3 days.
But please check Pancreas also as this could be the reason of IBS
- especially if you drink coffe/wine/ or smoke but this is not a must to
suffer for Pancreas. However great you ordered it can only help!
Just be aware the one you got is really strong! so maybe dosage
should be bit smaller...
Fingers crossed!
Hi,
I agree! Talking to people on this forum really does help because when I tell my family and boyfriend how I am feeling and how physically and emotionally draining this condition can be they don't understand and sometimes I have to cancel plans with people because I am in that much pain and constantly worrying 'if I go out am I going to get an upset stomach? Is there going to be a toilet in case of an emergency?'
I have been taking the ginger every day for the past two weeks (most times I have one piece after a meal) but it doesn't seem to be working.
I have been on the new medication for over 3 weeks and was told to give it a trial period for a month but it doesn't seem to be working either.
I have also tried probiotics for 1 week and they didn't work either.
I have cut out caffine, dairy and gluten and that didn't make a difference.
I also feel so so tired all the time that once I get home from work I just want my bed, I don't want to see friends or anything as I have no energy as it's so exhausting being in pain all the time. The way I describe my pains is that it feels like I am always hungry even after eating - it's like a rumbly pain. I used to go to the gym on a daily basis but the pain has got so bad that I can't go anymore. I have had two sets of blood tests, a stool test and an ultrasound and all came back as normal.
Also, thank-you for your positivity! It gives me hope!
xx
Hello again Lauren
Has the Doctor told you to go back to them after the month's trial of these new tablets? You need to find something that does work so keep going back until you do. Have you been tested for Celiac?
There's a lot of talk about it being a bacterial problem so we need to keep that in mind and perhaps explore this as it would make sense. I am taking this Makuna Honey now but haven't noticed any change in symptoms yet...
I am going on holiday at the weekend and know the relaxing will help to some point but I am going to fight this so much when I return and if I have to pay to go to private clinics I will so I will keep you posted.
I really want you to get better soon. xxx
Hi there - I've been taking it since Friday; no change yet but I will keep going! I will keep you posted. xx
fingers crossed - if no change after 2 weeks means it is not workin...
How you takin in it?
did you check Pancreas?
best!
