Help... Newly diagnosed celiac

Hi fellow celiacs,

So I was recently diagnosed and I'm struggling to understand whether I am allowed to have products that are manufactured in factories which handle gluten, whether its seasonings chocolate etc and it says it may contain gluten

I would avoid these products if you have coeliac disease, but they are probably fine if you just have an intolerance.

I do indeed have celiac disease, could you link to me to a reliable source that discusses this?

This can be tricky because sometimes it says it on the back of things that would never contain gluten and I think it's to cover themselves like when they say "may contain nuts" on packets of crisps!!

I personally feel that if it is not an active containing ingredient in the item then I have it and I'm ok. Some people react to the slightest bit of contamination so they could be sensitive and get a reaction!

Confusing I know I don't know if there is a definate right or wrong but I would like to know too!

The advice that you will always get is that the product must be "gluten free" Even if it shouldn't contain gluten if not "gluten free" then it could be contaminated.

E.g Chips might have been fried in a pan which had bits of batter from fish in it. The toaster might be contaminated with crumbs from ordinary bread.

If you are diagnosed with  coeliac disease as opposed to gluten intolerant then you must steer clear of all forms of gluten  - even items "contaminated".

You should get an appointment with a dietician under the NHS.

If u can't wait for appointment with NHS dietician then ring Coeliac UK and speak to their dieticians. My daughter has had bad reactions to foods which have no gluten in ingredients, but could have been contaminated in a factory line. We don't take the risk.
