From time to time when I get up to pee at night even though I have alot of pressure it is difficult to begin the stream. It oftens takes a couple of minutes to be rewarded with a weak stream... Daytime urination has not been an issue.
The last few days this has become a nightly occurrence, and seems to be more difficult to pee each time. This is just before I am leaving for 2 weks in France.
Any suggestions on anything that can be done to help urinating- worried about the 8 hour flight especially. If I have issues in France I can always consult a doctor, bur would rather not.
Hi Richard, so it appears you have an overactive bladder. Best to see a doctor about that. Should be possible to get control of that. Is it as bad as that during the day? I have had some problems in the past but have been on Finisteride which is a drug that reduces the prostate and releases pressure on the bladder. I only get up once in the night, and have no problem with flow, I am nearly 79years. You must be in USA if it takes 8 hours to fly to France.
I'm not sure why David thinks it is due to an overactive bladder. Sounds more like a typical symptom of BPH to me, very similar to my initial symptoms. If it continues to be difficult, you should be concerned about the possibility of AUR, acute urinary retention. Not something that you would want! I would definitely suggest seeing a urologist, as much as I have had mixed results with them over the years. My initial treatment was tamsulosin (Flomax), which definitely helped, but had difficult side effects for me. I opted for a PAE, which only helped me marginally. I then switched from tamsulosin to daily Cialis, which has worked fine, with reduced side effects compared to tamsulosin. It's considerably more expensive, though.
I agree with Rich... Ever time I take a cialis 5mg before bedtime I do not have to get up a night at all.. The flow is better. I too had PAE and it was almost two years ago. Still do not have to take any pills and still pee, some days better than others I drink a lot of coffee in the morning which creates a bunch of bathroom trips every morning. But everything works fine in the afternoon. When not taking cialis I have a few seconds delay before I starting in the morning or when I have to get up at night. A friend of mine has your problem and seem to reduce it by taking motrin just before bedtime and he says it solved his problem ... probably worth a try.
You can do a simple test. Measure the volume (ml) of urine that you pass at a time and time (seconds) taken to complete the job. Then calculate approximately the rate (ml per second). Depending on your age there is an acceptable rate you should pass. If the rate is very low.. then there is an obstruction. Also, if you suffer from BPH your flow is divided into two or more very often and there is urgency to pass. Best thing is to see a urologist and get scanned your lower abdomen and urinary track.
Ed, curious as to how old you are. I've noticed that there are times when I have had low fluid intake for several hours prior to bed time that I still wake up 2 or 3 times, just don't need to pee the second or third time. I've heard that not sleeping well comes along with aging even if it's not a urinary issue. I'm 70.
I am 75 years old. been dealing with peeing issues since I was forty. Usually an infection in my early years. I do not control my evening intake of water etc. So I that does not help with the night ventures to the bathroom. Unless I have an infection I usually get up only once and with Cialis I get up zero which I do not take everyday.. To damn expensive. Two years ago I was taking two flomax a day ... none since PAE sleep pretty good usually
FYI: I buy the 5mg Cialis tablets, and use a pill cutter to cut in half or in quarters which has allowed me to experiment with different dosages. The 5mg and 2.5 mg tablets cost me the same (insurance kicks in some, but still pretty pricey... there is some talk of it going generic or even OTC in the near future).
I use to cut the 5 mg into and take one a day. I now take 5mg ever few days. Seem to help the sex part better. I was in Vancouver and visited a doctor there for 77 dollars US and then bought a years supply from Costco. Total cost about 900 dollars.. my insurance will not pay for Cialis
Don't rely on opinions you read here. If you are facing an eight hours flight to France you need to see a doctor and find out what your true problem is.
I always travel with a bottle to urinate in and always wear absorbent underwear on flights.
Here's how I manage my intake of liquids: I stop taking liquids 5 hours before bedtime, my body keeps sending fluid to my bladder, only less. The next morning, 12 hours from my last drink, my urine is not darker than usual therefore I am not yet dehydrated.
I agree, see a doctor before flying.
Another idea, can you change for 2 four hour flights?
Hi David, how long have you been on finasteride ? Any side effects ? Are you taking any thing else with it ? I have been on Doxazosin and just started finasteride 4 months ago. Hank
Do you know your PVR (post void residual)? If not, find out from your urolgist, or have yourself scanned in the office.
There could be a number of reasons why voiding is more difficult at night. In addition the scan, a 24 hour urine log would be helpful.
I agree with those suggesting this is a progression of BPH/LUTS and not overactive bladder. If you haven't tried a muscle relaxant like Flomax or Daily Cialis, that is usually the first step.
Why after all these years the immediate concern of flying and not being able to urinate? Do you have reason to believe that you wouldn't be able to urinate at all? If it does come to the point where the inability to urinate becomes a real concern, and if the drugs don't work, then you will either need some sort of prostate reduction surgery or learn how to self catheterize yourself.
Is it related to night-time erections I wonder? Hormone levels are usually higher in the early hours / beginning of the day. Have you tried walking round a bit before attempting to urinate, this would give time for any erection to subside more. It may also help to sit on the toilet, bending forward with hands on feet. This can straighten the pipe and ease the flow.
