I had this hip op done 4 weeks ago. I find it impossible to sleep at night. I have awful pain in my lower back and in the groin of my operated leg. On Tuesday I had a tummy bug with the result I dehydrated and had three days of intense vertigo.I had to move my operated hip into different positions so I could lie on bed without getting dizzy.
I was in bed for 3 days and now I am back to square 1.
I am trying to be positive but I feel weak,
Hi! I hate to hear you are still so uncomfortable! I had a right THR almost 5 weeks ago. My sleeping is doing so much better. I told my husband I was a combination of a newborn baby/rotisserie chicken-meaning I was waking up every 2 hrs and turning from my back to my side trying to get comfortable!!
I think it's important that you don't get dehydrated as it might make blood clots easier to form. I'm still using the cane, but can walk for 30 minutes without a cane. Hang in there. It gets better! I have no more pain except when I put full weight on my operated leg.
Hi
Dehydration can make you feel awful
Isotonic drinks are good for it,if you can't take thoose keep really well hydrated.you can buy hydration sachets as well.
Hope your comming to the end of it.
The sleep and pain will get better at around week 5 my sleep improved, only getting up once in tne night, pain improved.
I felt week 5 I had a breakthrough, have you tried extra pillows? also alot of people suggested putting pillows under knees. I took 30 mg codeine at bedtime, this helped, regular pain meds as well.
It really us awful sleeping on your back,I hated it, first 2 weeks were the worst,it will get be.
Hope you feel better soon
Best wishes
Nicky
hi skye,
Official warm welcome to the hippies forum -
I read that you had Hemiathroplasty because you fell and broke your hip ..
I am so sorry to hear that ypu are feeling poorly -
Remember that you just had major invasive surgery and your body is healing, not only from the surgery but also from the accident - Tummy bug is not helping, of course - I had Norovirus and it definitely set me back (and I am many more moons post op than you) -
Lying on your back is tough - I was allowed to lie on non-operated side right away with pillow between knees but had to lie on back for at least 60 minutes (in increments) in order to keep hip stretched ...
It is okay, darling --- you are not back at square one, even though you might feel that way - just be very gentle with yourself - take your time standing up and moving about ... use a cane or other walking aid to prevent an unexpected fall ..
when is your follow up apointment?
please come back and let us know how you are getting on, okay?
big warm hug
renee
I'm sorry to hear that you have back and groin pain. In my experience back pain can often be got rid of by seeing a chiropractor.
If your back is not in a balanced state perhaps as the result of holding yourself awkwardly or any number of reasons this can cause muscle spasms and these can in turn result in pain elsewhere.
Cheers Richard
Hi Renee, thanks for the lovely message. My lower back is so painful this morning - difficult to walk. Really feel like I have done damage to myself. My buttocks on the side of my op are sore and I was beginning to think I had dislocated the hip but I think I would be in much more pain.
The vertigo I suffered when I dehydrated has really frightened me and I feel like I will never get back to myself.
I suppose patience is a virtue but I am not a very good patient lol!
I am so sorry, darling ... will a heat pad help?
I don't know how a dislocated hip is supposed to feel but one forum member walked around with dislocation for a couple of days - Hopefully she will respond to this post ...
Do you still have vertigo?
Sometimes it helps to accept what is ... to relax and surrender - to not resist and not beat your self up ...
How did you break your hip?
Hi Renee,
I was in my bedroom making the bed and I tripped on the edge of the duvet. My foot got stuck.I am 64 years of age and apart from having asthma all of my life I have had good health. Now I feel I will never be able to go back to work or be pain-free again.
I go back to hospital 6 week check on 26th April so I should know if I have done damage. When I was lying on my side I had my op leg bent it was only way I could get comfortable and to be honest when you in pain and discomfort you will do anything to ease it.
Oh boy .... how unlucky ... I have a friend who broke his ankle when he stepped off the scale (one of thos flat digital ones) and could not get over how stupid he felt ...
Don't despair, sweetheart -
