Hi All thanks for being here

Had right hip replaced May 14 , direct anterior approach fit 57 yr old male.

So im 4 days in here and read so much about this approach and how quick you recover etc. Well im having a hard time, no energy , I would love to shave and shower, i just dont have it in me to get up and do it, have any of you experienced this ? Im on these Hydro Mhorpham pills for pain. The most pan is in my lower back from lying around so much. Not sure if i should just push through and shave and shower and go for a waik, or listen to my body and rest.

Any experience or insight would be great

Thank you all so much for being here

Rick

Hi Ricky,

This may sound a bit daft to you but, I had a friend who had a hip replacement and she had no energy, sat around all day. She was taken to a doctor and he said it was her diet. He did not want to give her pills so told her to eat things like spinach, foods that were rich in vitamins and minerals. It worked, she soon recovered her energy.

Hey Rick,

4 days?? Give yourself a break! I was completely in the same boat, mentally, as you, but now understand that much more than getting around the house and being entertaining for company would really not have been doable.

I highly recommend getting a wash, though! Are you allowed to get your wound wet? I wasn't, for 2 weeks. Do what you can, and you will feel better for it, but not too much!! I am 9 weeks post THR R, lateral approach, and 50.

Sounds about right to me I had my second 1 week ago by Superpath again supposed to recover quickly and I did ok last time but whatever procedure you have it is major surgery and a massive insult on your body take it easy give yourself a chance today is the first day I feel I have any energy back hip feels good though .

I also had the anterior approach on both hips. The most recent one was last month so I'm now at five weeks post surgery. You may have had some blood loss during surgery and that can cause fatigue. Also I found that pain medicine really messed with my body as did the anesthesia. You should try to move around as lying down all the time is not good for you. I think you should be getting up at least once an hour during the day as blood clots can be a factor of too much inactivity. I bet in another week or so you will be feeling much better.

Hi Rick. I encourage you to listen to your body! The pain pills make you feel relaxed and a sense of "less urgency" about things and I think that's a plus when we are healing. I also felt what I thought was lower back pain but it was on the surgical side and I too blamed it on sitting around but for me im pretty sure it was the hip joint and inflammation, just from the back side. When my healing progressed it really settled down and I was still sitting/lying nearly as much.

You are SO early in the process. Dont rush things! I wish I hadn't read so much about other people's timelines because it just made me feel like a loser. I am 9.5 weeks out and got an infection 8 weeks out. I feel like I'm back to the beginning again in many ways. Now that this is another go round, I am more concerned with listening to my body than I was. Time...time...time. good luck!

Hi Rick, just take it easy for a couple of weeks and then slowly become more active. Don’t listen to these macho people who leap into a taxi after surgery so they can go to the gym on their cross trainer and then go out to dinner. You have been through a serious operation and it is quite normal to feel tired due to the healing process required. A high protein diet does help the healing.

Thanks so much Jen

It dose not sound daft at all. Im kinda down in the dumps etc and will use food as my comforter , and not the good foods.

Thanks much

Hey thanks Mel, yes i can get the wound wet, its a water proof cover.

Yes i will have a shave and shower, thats the key for me, is to do what i can, but not to much

Thanks again

Thanks very much

Thanks Anne

Thanks Molly, i hope things clear up for you

Thanks again

Very good advice, thanks very much

I was off the pills in two days. Never had any problems with tiredness. Went to the gym the day of discharge

you sound fed up-quite understandable under the circumstances-are you still in hospital,?just wondered, cos they didnt let me hang about,i was up n showering onthe second day, taking little walks, then chucked out-sorry,sent home in the afternoon.it is hard, when all movement hurts, and you cant do what you could,i really sympathise because mine was done more than 3 months ago,and i still get bleak days.it doesnt hurt to let things go a bit for a while, just try and look after yourself,to aid your recovery, decent food, plenty of rest-and of course "the exercizes"and short walks.sincerely hope you start to feel better soon x

dare i say-"huh"!x

Everyone recovers at a different rate. Don't be upset with your progress at 4 days. You had major surgery and your body needs to adjust to that. Shower when the doctor says you can, get up and walk a little inside for a start, and don't push too hard.

Don't be concerned about comparing yourself to others. We are all different.

When I went to pre op I was told being fit for this operation was very important and to exercise and eat well. After the operation it is more important to stay well, you should not be lacking energy. You may have constipation and/or sickness. I always remember my friend did not have a good diet, did not eat vegetables and spinach was the main thing she said the doctor mentioned along with a good diet. Luckily I like it and have eaten 4/5 times a week since op with my evening meal. I really believe if you start eating well you will feel better very quickly. Good luck.

Take it steadily Rick, it’s very early days. Take your meds, do your exercises, have a little stroll. Have a shower, you’ll probably feel a lot better for it.

Good luck,

Judith

Seriously? You only took painkillers for two days and then went the gym? We must all be missing a trick then, or you have supernatural powers..... this poor man is crying out for support for feeling like he’s not coping and blaming himself and telling him you didn’t need pills almost straight away after the surgery and went to exercise on the day of discharge is only going to make him feel more inadequate. Sorry but I don’t find your comment helpful. :-(

It’s major surgery. Most people need medication and time to recover. I was in hospital for 10 days after a dynamic hip screw for a fall at work. It’s 4 weeks now and am still on crutches, the gym is a far off prospect - mainly because I don’t want to go, rather go walking, which without crutches ain’t happening for a while yet.

Rick, take your time, recover, do what feels ok, don’t feel bad about taking painkillers- they help you move, which you need to do to stop the stiffness.  Feeling down is normal, but it will pass. Sending healing thoughts! Vanessa
