Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry there's so many of us here, but I am so glad I am not alone!

I have been prescribed Norethisterone to take over 19 days. I have been suffering with terrible periods, heavy bleeding at least twice a month and completely unpredictable. This has been going on for about 12 months and has played havoc with my life (I'm a lecturer) and let's not even think about my sex life. I've had three scans (1 external and 2 internal) and a biopsy from my womb (which thankfully came back normal). Current thinking is that I have a) polyps, b) fibroids, or c) it's hormonal (even though blood tests have been normal).

I have been terribly tired while taking these tablets but, despite being exhausted, I can't sleep. I've had grumbly period pain but thankfully no bleeding. I'm bloated and I could eat for Wales, but I haven't had any major weight gain - my heart goes out to those of you who have, God, it's hard being a girl, sometimes.

I am due to stop taking the tablets on Sunday (17th December) so I am sure that the period from hell will arrive just in time for the various Christmas functions I am obliged to attend.

My consultant is hoping that these tablets will cause me to shed my womb lining properly and that my periods will then return to normal. I'll update you all next week (I bet you'll all look forward to that!)

In the meantime, best wishes to you all, here's hoping that everyone's symptoms at least settle down enough for a happy and carefree Christmas break.

Saffy xx

Hope the tablets work and you have a "normal" period but if not get back on the pills at least that way you know when it's coming!

Hi Saffy,

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I went from having normal periods to having heavy and erractic periods over 12 months ago.

Having being dismissed within 3 minutes by the first gp i saw stating it was my age - im 27, i then saw another gp about 6 months ago and he sent me for a scan. Something came up which the drs thought was a polyp. I had whatever it was, (they are still not sure what it was i cant get answers until my appointment mid april.. ) removed on 2nd jan and havent stoped bleeding since. I just called the hospital and the consultant told me to go to my GP and get prescribed Norethisterone for 3 weeks.

Ive been reading this site and am increasingly worried about taking it. can you tell me how it worked for you in the end?

Many thanks and hope all is better now.

R

My bleeding stopped within a few days of taking the tablets, so yes they work. But I personally was very 'hormonal' (use your imagination!!). But I guess us ladies cant have it all. I felt it was more important to stop bleeding (didnt want to be dealing with anaemia etc aswell).

If your not happy with what any doctor or GP is telling you, ask for a 2nd opinion, you are within in your rights.
