Hi Everyone!

It's the first time I am writing here...I am going to have a hip replacement on June 1st. Who is in the same situation?

Hi,

I am just waiting for my date. I have to go to joint school on friday of this week and have been told my op will be sometime in June.

Good luck.

Thank you for your answer, I had my joint school on April 23 , soon after that I got the letter with the op's date.

Good luck to you too.

Hi,

Can I ask what equipment they gave you for home?

They gave me long crutches, I am practicing at home. In hospital they also give you on loan a  raised toilet seat, pincher etc. but I bought mine from the Argos catalogue.

I'm awaiting my date, just had a perching stool and a tray on wheels, I had already got a grabber and a shoe horn and some ice packs.

If they don't give you a slide sheet. Try and get one. It is so useful getting in and out of cars, and also when doing your exercises it makes it easier in the early days. They also gave me a seat for over the bath to help getting in and out to have a shower. A grabber up stairs as well as down is easier and finally my V pillow has been a godsend at night when it is impossible to get comfy.

Hope the op goes well. For me that was the easy bit, the hard work starts afterwards. 3 weeks post op and doing ok here.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I joined about 3 weeks aho and its been a godsend! Any question or concern you have will be instantky answered by folk who have been in the same position.

My date is June 4th in Aberdeen. Where are you having yours?

Thak you jan24212. Wrere did you buy your slide sheet? Can I use a pvc table cloth? I have a shover cubicle, so I don't need to use the bath.

I have a v pillow , an long shoe horn and grabbers.

How do you wash your hair in the first weeks after op, when you cannot bend over 90 degrees?

welcome to hippie land and this wonderful forum .... I wish I had found it prior THR surgery - it would have saven me a lot of anguish - Operation is not that bad, that's true - however ... the recovery and healing process is quite challenging - that is why I come here ... nobody understands us better than us ...

I live alone and am 8 weeks post-op ... the only thing I had raised toilet seat, shower bench (didn't need that after all), grabber ( wish I had that one before surgery) and one of those funny shaped plastic thingy to put on socks ... I also had crutches but was advised to get a walker as I live alone ... unlike most of you who are on crutches I have this 4 wheel walker ... anybody using one of those too instead of crutches ? I am in Holland ...

I am happy for you that you have a date !!!

Thank you Rosie 86947. I am down south near Reading in Berkshire.

Hi Renee,

crutches or walker are the same , I think...The idea is to be safe, slipping and falling are to be avoided at all cost!!!!

When I go shopping I use the trolley like a walking frame...it does help!

The4 -wheels walker is called "rollator" in Dutch, so maybe they call it a "trolley" in UK -

As for hair washing. I had a home nurse come to help me wash and get dressed etc . she just put me in a chair (with pillow) in front of the kitchen sink so I could lean backwards - then she used a big cup to wash my hair - de-i-ci-ous feeling after hospital stay .....

You can get anything online on one of the disabled or nursing sites. But I guess a pvc tablecloth would work as long it is very slides!!! They are used all the time in care homes and hospitals for moving patients with limited mobility around. I wash my hair in the shower so no bending involved thank goodness. Take all the help you can get us my advice.

I mean I use the trolley given to everyone in a supermarket , It helps because I lean on it ...

I hope I can wash my hair in the shower cubicle, standing ...we will see!

Hi Briskwalk,

just harping on on about your question regarding hair washing.  It depends what your surgeon allows, some will allow showers pretty much immediately, unfortunately mine won't and the hair washing has been the most problematic area for me.  I have very greasy hair but have had to limit washing to every 3 days ...... My husband washes it in the sink for me,  I can just about get away with not breaking the 90 degree rule.  If anyone has any other suggestions I would also be interested ...

good of luck with the operation and a speedy recover

Hi Pam, I have had someone wash my hair too. I couldn't do it sitting on the perching stool as there was too much bend so I stand up hold on the the sink and just bend my head over it. That  has been working fine.

I was told two weeks before a shower but I can't use mine anyway as it is in the bath and i'm not allowed to get in the bath until 6-8 weeks after the op. I'm doing strip washes and getting someone to do my feet and change the compression socks!

Nightmare isn't it Anne.  I am having strip wash too and hubby doing my feet in the bidet! Stitches out on Wednesday and hoping I can have a shower, I am very lucky to have a walk in shower - what are you going to do, how long will you have to wait for a shower, are there no aids to help you get into the bath?

Lucky you with a walk in shower. I have a friend who has one but she's away for 3  weeks. I am just going to continue  to strip wash. I haven't any bath aids and I just can't get my legs over the side without breaking the 90 degree rule! So I will just have to wait. I've got my follow up appointment with the surgeon on 9th June so am hoping that from then I will be able to bend!

To be honest I'm more bothered about the pain going and having a good night's sleep than showers. Roll on the day when I can sleep on my side!

Hi Pam

Have you tried dry shampoo? I haven't used it since the 60s but my daughter assures me its much improved so I have bought a can to try - my op is at the beginning of June. I have also had my hair cut VERY short!
