Hi,

I have quite a lot of Solar (actinic) Keratosis on my head. I've had larger ones curetted off, others frozen off and am now using Efudix cream to remove wider ranging ones. I did get Solaraze prescribed last year as a stop gap and it did a good job with little side effects, but most of the condition returned. The Dermatologist said Efudix is more powerful and I've read that after 12 months you can still be clear, havn't seen any trials longer than that though.

Efudix (sometimes called Efudex) is a cream you apply once or twice a day for around a month. Some people seem to have very inflammatory reactions. I've read that inflammation is needed for the best effect.

My forehead is currently being treated and after 20 days it has quite a lot of red blotches that are a bit sore but not so bad. The instructions say only do up to 9 inches square at one time and I can understand why having seen a few photos on the internet. I'll be doing my scalp next when the freezing treatment has healed.

I'm keeping a day by day log of what I've done and how I've expanded the area.

A lady in Australia has posted a photo where she is using it all over her face including near her mouth which seems a bit surprising.

Hi. Also my husband has SK. He was treated with Efudix approx 3 yrs ago on his face (a large area) and the results were as you expect. The skin now is back to normal and he has to protect it well from sun damage in order to maintain the results. The process however was extreme. The skin becamse very sore and red before peeling ( a little like a chemical peel as seen on cosmetic surgery programs). We bathed the skin very gently with luke warm water and a soft lintfree cloth which helped greatly. The main thing was to keep out of dust or dirty environments at that time. It was hard going but certainly worth it. The areas on his forehead and temples where he did not treat with efudix have now had to be treated with solaraze gel as you say. They are not as sore, but very dry, and the process although gentler definately does not have the same end result, albeit a little kinder. He now has SK on his scalp where he is ' thinning a little' and is going for cryotherapy on this (which he had a little of last year). We are hoping that using efudix will not be necessary this time. Fingers crossed. At the end of it all if he heeded the doctors advise 8 yrs ago and protected his skin with hats and sunblock he would not be in this state now - men hey! :D
