hi I am new and need advice please. ibs getting really bad

Hi everyone. I am really hoping someone will reply to me. To cut my story short, I was diagnosed with IBS 8 years ago. For the last 3 years I felt quite ok. I was taking 2 immodium a day when I felt I needed it but no other problems really. But last week I started with really bad stomach ache and then diarrhoea. I had diarrhoea for few days and really bad stomach ache so went to see GP who said its gastroenteritis.  For the last 2 days I ate bananas and plain white rice. I felt better but really weak. I lost 7 pounds in 5 days. Today I thought I will try and start eating. I had boiled potatoes and poached salmon and some beetroot. As soon as I finished it I had to run to toilet with bad diarrhoea and a bit of stomach ache again. The food just went straight through me. I really dont know what to do? I want to be able to eat food and actually keep it inside. Can someone please help me? What do you all do when you cant eat and food goes straight through you? Also my GP doesnt seem to care about my problems at all. He just tells me to take immodium but I dont want to take this for the rest of my life?

Thank you

I had a bad bout of diarroreah last year. Everything I ate for 10 days went through me. I just knew it wasn't IBS. I had a bowel

Infection. 24 hrs of antibiotics stopped the diarreah. So don't rule out that you may  have an infection.

I am 31 years old. I only tried eating bananas and white rice to help my bowels rest. But today I had potatoes and salmon and it went straight through me. What can I eat so I stop running to toilet?

I had a stool sample sent to be tested and nothing was found so I dont think its infection. I was hoping they would find something but nothing. sad(

Hi I dont drink coffee. I was told its an irritant and not good for ibs. I stopped drinking it 7 years ago. How do I make broth with turkey? I dont eat red meat as well. Thanks for your advice smile

You are probably right. I just dont know how to get back to normal sad

Hi susie I am a bit concerned that Agnes is trying to bully you into something that doesn't feel right. I have Crohn's disease and when my loose BMs get too bad I use the brat diet for no more than 3 days bananas rice applesauce and toast. If after the 3 days you still run to the loo I would go back to GP even asking to see someone else in the practice. You have lost quite a bit of weight and that isn't normal. It may mean the GP needs to run some blood test at least. Take care and hope you feel better soon.

Hi susie i have IBS my new doctor is helping me i take one Nexium tab in the morning also one colese tablet and one Fauldings Probiotics for women (50 billion good bacteria } i do this all once in the morning and again after tea, also i take Metamucil to put more fibre in my body plus i take Buscopan tablets 2/4 a day and Gaviscon.P Liquid.

also take to your chemist there are other products out some do cost a little more ,i have been to Dietitian because the seem to say it's the food which is not always correct.my doctor said most of the extreme pain i use to get is from a bug and the way your stomach works.

I had to put a hot water bottle on my tummy a lot just to ease the pain.

I hope this helps you ,also have you been to a Bowel Specalist you must do that i have to go every 3 yrs and have a colonscopy done.  Alex.

Hi Alex thanks a lot for your reply. I think the first thing to say is that I live in the UK. Doctors here are rubbish. I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 23. I am now 31. I had colonoscopy and the other one where they put camera down your throat. Nothing was found. Biopsies taken. Nothing. I tried Mebeverine. It helped for 2 days. I tried Amytriptiline for stomach pains. It helped a bit. But I dont want to go back on it. Made me feel really drowsy and tired during the day. I am now taking Buscopan. Doesnt seem to do much. I saw my doctor and asked what can I do. He basically said nothing as its IBS and take immodium. I dont want to do that. He said no point doing tests, I had them done. I feel like saying just because I had them done 8 years ago doesnt mean I cant have something else now? Its like saying I was tested for cancer 8 years ago and because I didnt have it then,   I cant have it now. Its ridiculous. I want them to do some other test or send me to dietitian or to see a specialist but nothing. I dont know what tablets to take to make me feel better.

how do you feel on medication. Do you feel ok? Can you eat with no problems? Thanks

Hi I have tried bananas and rice but it didnt stop my runs lol. My doctor is useless. He basically told me to take imodium. They just dont care at all. I will be asking to see a doctor again and requesting blood test but what do I need to be tested for? Thanks

I appreciate your advice. I am glad people are sharing with me as it gives me a better idea on what to do. Thank you

Agnes your advice is making an assumption that susies diet is full of junk food and clearly boiled potatoes and salmon are not in this category. We should never assume as it can be insulting. What she has eaten is healthy food and she just wants to get back to feeling normal. Susie sorry for high jacking your thread.

Susie

My experience sounds very similar to yours.

They just do not seem to ever give me a correct diagnosis and this is purely and simply because they do not give me the correct tests and time to see what it is I suffer from every day.

I have lost all faith in doctors. In the uk if you do not pay big bucks for their precious time you basically suffer.

I'm totally disgusted at my treatment over this.

My doc offered me amytrypltiline  which I flatly refused as it can affect the heart and I already get palpitations. He wasn't happy I questioned him on this so then he offered me another anti depressant which he said may work for calming my stomach. I'm giving him my benefit of doubt and trying them they are called citalopram I'm a week in, they make me a bit tired only a low dose of 10 mg a day. No difference yet but we will see.

Susie ask the doctor for CRP for inflammatory markers there is a screening panel can't. Remember all the bloods on one screening but they usually do Full blood count liver enzymes if the CRP is raised it may point to infection or inflamation and so would require further tests, CT scan Colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy this was the test that found my Crohn's disease. Let me know how you get on good luck.

But banana is supposed to be a good food for ibs. I havent eaten anything other than bananas and white rice in last 4 days or so. Today boiled potatoes and poached salmon. Its not unhealthy food. I dont eat junk almost ever. Im trying to be healthy. But nothing works. Thats why I am asking if anyone knows what else can help. But thanks for your input tho. I appreciate it.

Ok thanks I will try. Although I am sure they will tell me they wont do it as its ibs lol. Thats always their answer sad

I have heard citalopram might work for some. I dont know tho. I hope it works for you. I will see what the doctor tells me when I go and see him. They are just full of crap arent they lol

good luck suzie....lots of differing suggestions here. i am trying to eat the paleo way...ill let you look that up by google...your own research and familiarity with your body will guide you....something is causing inflammation resulting in this auto immune reaction. theres a young man on this site ...a little earlier..who has found a book he's working with and seems to want to share...plus you have other kind offers. your CRP would be raised ...no need to confirm what you already instinctively know. take charge of your own cure...this is the start of your journey...enjoy...people looking out for you...so kind...keep us informed!

love marey x

Hi. How did they know it was an infection and to give you antibiotics?

Hi thanks for your reply. Sorry bit what young man do you mean and what book? Thanks. I was thinking of trying Fodmap. Anyone tried to eat following that? Thanks
