Hi, I had a total right hip replacement (trhr) October 2011, the pain is worse than before and I'm on 59 pills a day. Is this normal?

I'm sick of the pain every day there is never a good day.

Since my trhr in 2011 I have been for a second opinion and had all the scans and checks, which have all come out normal. March last year 2013 I had revision surgery on my hip. I have had 2 lots of infections both times been in hospital for at least 2 weeks and both times operated on.

My first consultant said after the 6 post op check " look at the x-ray, that's a good joint, so my work is done" never said anything about the pain.

So, what do I do now ? who do I see ? do I just accept this is now the way I'm going to be ?

Dose anyone know of having the hip joint taken out completely ?

Hi sorry to hear about your long term pain. I am becoming bemused of the many posts about the attitude of some surgeons. What are your pain symptons? I am 8 weeks post op and from waking post op I have had the following problems. Numb inner thigh, knee and prickly and sore below knee to ankle. Electric shock type shooting pains. Painful knee when trying to walk, pain in groin and aches aong leg. I cant lift my lower leg when getting into bed or in a car. For this I use a belt. I went to visit my surgeon last week and he showed me my xray which shows implant is in place. I told him all my symptons and he was sympathetic and said out of over a thousand he has only had 1 patient with similar who recovered feeling after 9 months. He has referred me to a nerve specialist for tests. It is my femoral nerve that is damaged he is confident that feeling will return and the electric shock feelings are nerves tyring to connect so he has counted out a cut nerve. Also written to my gp to give me prescription for nerve pain. So when I have the tests he can access the damage. However I had a car accident 22 years ago and my pelvis was fractured along with the hip socket resulting in pins screws and plates and had pain for 22 years. post traumatic arthritis was reason for my replacement. However my experience after this op has been as almost as bad as my first op. The reason I am giving you the symptons is maybe you have similiar pain and maybe have nerve damage. If you can relate to it perhaps you can get your gp to refer you to nerve specialist. Or alternatively do you know what type of hip has been used. there is a lot on the net about problems with the implants that have been used and metal on metal causing problems. Can you find out if this could be your pain source. You have had a bad experience and I sympathise. Reading your post again perhaps its not the implant! I hope that my post is any help. I

Hi Debbie, Thanks for your reply, sorry you are experiencing discomfort and pain after your hip operation, one good thing is you have a diagnosis and it can be and will be sorted out for you.

A big part for me is no one will give me a diagnosis. I have had, Just give it time, it will heal ok and the hip will be fine, nerve damage, CRPS, my body wont accept the new hip, infections ?, ostio militias, they cant control my blood because I am on warfrin, which I have now been taken off warfrin to make my blood thick and so it can heal ?

District nurses come to change my dressing as I have a big hole around where I had my last op, it is now 6 weeks since my op and it wont stop bleeding. I am waiting for a "vac" to be put on my scar, cant do it till it stops bleeding.

We are running out of options.

I cant live taking 59 drugs a day.

Its not fare for my family, stress! is just getting worse by the day.

That all sounds awful I can understand how desperate you must be especially not getting any real answers. Why are they having to give you so many drugs? Have you any other health problems?

Before thr I played golf twice a week and badminton twice a week at least. So I was very fit.

God knows why I'm on so many drugs they just say, this drug will help the pain and this one will work with it and this will work with that one, and this one will work with this one etc etc.

I need to get off these drugs, but they all say no.

You must be so frustrated with no progress. Are you able to use crutches? I can't believe you went in for hip op and have had all these problems. The non healing sounds perhaps you have an infection hope it clears up soon. I wish they could give you some answers. Something has gone very wrong sounds like no one is being straight with you. Don't know what to say to help. I was getting confident moving around indoors and doing the odd thing with out my crutches. I have been standing without them for a few weeks while cooking and loading washing. Today I picked up my grandson aged 8 months off the floor to put him in his chair no walking as I went to bend I felt my leg wobble. It just gave way and I fell on the floor luckily there were pillows where he was sitting and we fell on them. Thank God he was fine as I was still holding him.I managed to put him in the chair while I was on the floor. I had to pull myself up using the settee but I was terrified my hip might have come out. Fortunately it is fine. So I am not doing that again so back to using both crutches my leg is too unstable. I have haf my leg give way a few times before but first time I fell. I need a leg brace. What the hell is going on go in to improve and reduce pain end up more pain and disabled then before.

Hi.... I've just read about everything you are going through. I sympathize and understand. I've had some serious problems with total hip replacement. Ive had both hips replaced. Due to complications I had four surgeries on my left hip. The original surgery, a debridement ... Total hip replacement removal and then months

later a new hip replacement. I've been through hell and it's 2 yrs post op and I still have pain. Thankfully my right hip replacement went much better. I am telling you my story because I know what it's like to suffer and

the feelings of hopelessness. When I had a wound like you say you have that is not closing , my first thought is infection. You are probably on antibiotics and those are terribly important.

You are not very far post op and depending on how severe your hip was to begin with will impact how long recovery is. I am thankful I can walk because I was bedfast for six months... Look for small victories each day. How are you getting around? The vac you speak of will help with drainage issues. I am thinking of you.
