Hiatal hernia came back.

I had Nissan procedure about 4 yrs ago.  It has come back - 35 cm - is this considered to be large? Am having abdominal pain and pain in chest, arms & entire back. There's not much I can eat. I frequently feel like I am choking & sometimes have problem drinking even water. I would appreciate any advice.

Hi Sandra,I,m new to this site,I have an HH as well but what exactly is the nissan procedure

Hi Sandra. 35cm is huge as far as  concerned! Have they said they wii redo your Nissen? Looks like you may need it .

I am also new to this site. The Nissan is a procedure to repair the hernia. The Dr. pushes the hernia (that is the part of the stomach that has pushed up thru the diaphragm) back down, then uses a mesh to basically hold it back down & repair the diaphragm. It worked for me for about 4 yrs. I didn't have reflux again. I was able to eat again w/o getting sick. But the hernia came back although smaller but is causing extensive pain...even more than before. It feels like it's sitting on a nerve. Am consuming liquids and baby food. Pain in abdomen and chest and radiates to back arms and hips. It also causes a choking feeling belching and gas. Am willing to have the Nissen done again today  if I could.

I misunderstood about the size of the hernia. The endoscopy was done yesterday. The hernia did come back...the Nissen was too tight so he dilated it...and there has been a "mesh failure"? I do know this hernia is smaller than before but the pain is worse. Am not sure what to expect. So far I don't see any improvement after the dilation or "stretching" of the Nissen. I will be seeing my surgeon soon and should learn more then. Whether the Nissan has to be done again or the more invasive surgery, I do not intend to have it done by anyone in this town again. I plan to go to Baltimore--possibly Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The mesh is the thing they use to repair your hernia. If it has failed then it will need to be repaired. It's not a major thing. It sounds as if they may have irritated your vagus nerve when they have operated. This can cause all kinds of symptoms, that plus the fact that you will be swollen from having the stretch may be causing a lot of your symptoms. Hopefully they will get better over time. In the meantime I'd push to get some answers as to why you are in so much pain.
