Hidden Gallstone

I had my gallbaldeer scan yesterday after my new consultant said he didn't think I needed to have my gallbladder removed as I didn't have 'typical ' symptoms.

I know I have a gallstone, I had no idea of its size or any details but knew on two previous scan it was there. But the radiographer couldn't find it.  He looked and look but no sign of this dreaded stone. I was shocked, but he said he wanted to try scanning me in other positions. Finally he put me on my stomach and scanned me from the side and he said he saw it come tumbling out from the neck of the gallbladder!  As soon as I returned to my back it hid again. He also said that my liver was 'bright' and textured, which is not good, but I am trying not to worry to much about that until my Dr can explain what that actually means. (I have scared myself enough already looking at the Internet)

Anyway I just though I would share as he did say had I been a first time patient and hadn't been so insistent that I had a stone, he would have said I didn't have one (it is only a tiny one) He advised me in future to tell anyone looking, to turn me in my front.  He said he also had been reminded that he should take more time in reposition patients to make sure he didn't miss anything.

I had somewhat of a similar issue where at first I had an ultrasound which found a gallstone in my gallbladder . I then seeked a second opinion and went to get a second ultrasound which showed I had nothing and the doctor took a long time to try and find it such as turning me on my back and on my side but nothing. After getting an MRI they saw that my gallbladder was filled with sludge and thus had to get it taken out.

Doctors do not tell you even half of what happens and what you go through having your gallbladder taken out. It is very important for your digestive system despite what they say. This is why I feel before making the decision to have it taken out it is important to seek multiple opinions and do multiple tests, especially when it involves feedback based on ultersounds as it is not always accurate and dependent on the person scanning you.

I have gallstones 4 small and one about 17mm. My symptoms started about 18 months ago. I had horrenous billiary cholic on 6 occasions and the last three as I understand it now I should have been admitted to hospital but because I was not & never have been jaundiced although I

went to our hospital I was sent home with three omeprazole !

Whilst I was being sick all night on three consecutive weekends apparently  a stone or stones must have been stuck in the duct/s.

One thing many medics do not emphasize is that serious complications can arise from gall stones. I have spoken to two people a male and female who could have died if their gall bladders had not been operated on when they were.

In my case I have no symptoms now for about two months but I reserched the fact that in the USA patients are readily given Ursodeoxcholic acid to dissolve their gall stones. Here however they are on the amber list with two designations 1 and 2, 2 being not so strict re

prescribing it as 1......

It has always appeared that the Americans in a lot of respect have always been about ten years in front of us in the UK which is a shame in many ways especially now there is the 'net'.

The NHS state that the side effects are mild when taking those tabs so why are they not tried more ? Rather than submit to the knife ?

I note that even folks with liver degeneration are not given these tabs

readily which seems to be a first line approach to help them who are inflicted with their unfortunate desease. They are given  by  the specialists who work within a hospital in Birmingham who specialize in livers but it seems some patients have a hard job to get the abovementioned medication..

We know the  NHS is short of funds so is it down to money ?

For some time now I have resorted to drinking doses of Cider Vinegar in either water of my usual beetroot juice and cranberry.

It is said that the acetic acid can dissolve the stones both in the gall

bladder and in the bladder as well. I do hope I can have the oportunity

to try those ursodeoxycholic acid tabs which are scientifically known to disslove certain stones for some patients.

hi Finadindin

i am still waiting for the result of my MRI scan on my back as when I went to see the surgieon about my gallstones he said that he would not remove my gallbladder because he believed my right side /back pain was not due to my gs.I have been in paiin off and on since feb 15. my latest attack has been for just over a week .I'm waiting for my gp to ring at let me know what my MRI showed up if it is not due to my back then I'm going to ask for another opinion on my gb,when I had my altra scan I was scaned all over but they would not tell me anything at that time.I don't really want to have my gb removed but if I going to be in this much pain then I would rather have it removed but your in the hands of the doctors.I don't think they realize how much pain you can be in.

hope all goes well for  you
