High cholesterol genetic abnormality

I saw my cardiologist today he said my total cholesterol was around 250 and LDL 151 and trig 268. He said

Since I am 41 years old and 20 lbs overweight it's likely that I have a chromosome or zygote abnormality which causes me to have very high cholesterol he is considering putting me on a statin.

What does this mean in terms of risk of dying young? Do people with genetic issues leading to very high cholesterol tend to die young?

Do you have any relatives with heart or cholesterol issues? There are a lot on genetic issues that are passed on in families and testing now can answer questions that 20 years ago your parents wouldn't have known about.

Yes to both my parents are in late 60's w high cholesterol and dad also has type2 diabetes.

Both are not healthy relative to their friends who are their age but do both work full time so not healthy in a relative sense they both look older than their peers but do not smoke and eat fairly well. In worried my genes will doom

It time for you to start eating the correct foods and excersising daily which with medication will improve your long term health and improve your outlook on life. If you smoke please quit! Join a gym and use their classes to get yourself in shape. Your still young and have a long life ahead of you.
