I have had a headache and even though I take 100 mcg on Levothyroxine for past ten years, Suddenly I have a high TSH of 9.5!
I read somewhere it could be cause of headaches or a Pituitary Gland Tumor-My doctor just increase my levothyroxine-
Should I visit and endochrinologist instead?
Worried!
Patti,
Yes I would an endo is more specialized in thyroid issues.
I am on throxine 150 and have Been for twenty years have your Bloods tacken every 12 weeks if your not happy with the way your go is treating you see another gp in your practice a good go should tacke your Blood every 12 weeks still your stable then twice a year if your stable after that once a year and Rembrandt you can die if you stop your throxine
Hi Patti,
Last summer my TSH was 9.5 too. I'd had a headache for a while, well, off and on for years actually.
I wouldn't worry about the tumor, so many other things are more likely causing the headache.
The first thing I'd consider is that for some reason you've stopped absorbing your thyroid medication. If you have low stomach acid, that could be the cause. It's best to take thyroid medication with vitamin C (ascorbic acid or citric acid) to help you absorb it. This has been reseached and documented by the endocrinology journals.
Are you taking any vitamin supplements? If not, time to start. This is what helped me the fastest with my headache.
Make sure you take a very strong B-complex. All the b-vitamins will give you a headache when they are low. Magnesium, iron, vitamin D, even iodine deficiency can all cause headaches. So it's just better to take a very good high quality (read the reviews before you buy) multivitamin PLUS a b-complex.
Do you drink green or black tea? Tea contains anti-nutrients that can interfere with iron and b-vitamins. Tea also contains high levels of fluordie which can affect thyroid function. This is what happened to me. And it took me forever to make the connection.
Coffee (even decaf) is similar to tea in that it contains anti-nutrients, specifically for thiamine (B1). Coffee also is high in tannins which reduce iron. Coffee isn't as bad as tea though. If you take enough B-vitamins and and take iron separate from the coffee, you should be fine.
If you're really worried about the pituitary tumor, consider that it's extremely rare, and that you'd have other symptoms, not just a headache. The pituitary controls the adrenals and all the sex hormones as well. I had my pituitary checked because I had milk leaking and I was NOT breastfeeding. I had high prolactin levels, but still didn't have a pituitary tumor. (It was B6 deficiency).
