Hip clicking

Hi.   i had a hip replacement 10 months ago ive had constant pain since which is being investigated.   the surgeon thinks may be sciatic nerve damage.   one thing that concerns me is that the joint clunks when i twist the leg.  it also does this when im swimming.   the leg is weakened and my gait is altered.    Anyone else had this?    Mandy

Dear Mandy

The clunking could be due to your muscles not being fully recovered and not holding the ball of the hip joint fully into the cup so I would be aware that dislocation could still happen.

I suggest taking care to avoid anything that makes that a possibility and work at your exercises to strengthen your hip muscles.

Best wishes, Richard

Hi Amanda,

As someone who has just had an THR I am interested in the long term recovery of people and what to expect. Reading the problems you are having I do feel for you. What type of THR did you have?

Mine definitely squeaks, usually in hot weather, when I am bending down to pick something up or tying a shoe lace. I was reassured by my new surgeon when he checked it, that there is nothing to worry about.

Get new x-rays to make sure everything is in it's proper place. Mine "clunks" too. Not all the time but at least a few times a day.  I'm still recovering 12 mos out from surgery.  I wonder if a muscle is catching on my new hip - who knows.  But continue to seek answers with your Dr. and don't give up. I am finally getting the help I need after 3 Ortho Dr's.

Hi

ive had 5 THR  2 tendon releases  and 2 dislocations, my hip was very click on most movements to the point of the dislocations. im 4 mths post op of the last one and still in so much pain through the tendon release site, its been roller coaster ride.both my dislocations happened while i was sitting down and in a medical proper suited chair which i hired for my recovery so standing or sitting they still dislocate.my tendon feels trapped again. when does it ever stop.

Sorry to hear you have had a lot of bad luck, did you exercise much before you first THR or has the surgeon said whether you have any problems with your bones for these problems to keep recurring.

Hi Jen

He hasn’t really said I have bone issues.

Iv always been active,I’m 56 and 7 grandchildren that keep me going.

Just unlucky I guess.

But everything certainly gets harder to deal with and is so painful.

I hope you can get some answers soon and start to recover. We go through this operation to relieve pain not create more.

I hope you get some answers Amanda. I had my THR almost 9 months ago and I still have issues with pain and stiffness. My gait still doesn’t feel normal and I have never gotten to that point of forgetting I had the surgery. All my x-rays look “perfect” but I have thigh stiffness from the stem which still really bothers me. It’s better than it was but not good enough. Have you had follow-up x-rays? Wish I had some suggestions for you. Hang in there and press for answers meanwhile.
