Hip followed by Knee

Hi everyone, I seem to be one of those people who is plagued with OA. Having had a hip replacement just over a year ago (and knowing that my other hip will also need doing at some point), both my knees are now playing up, in particular my right one where I am finding it difficult any to walk without pain. Have just seen the GP who has referred me for knee x-rays, she thinks the probable outcome will be a TKR. Has anyone else experienced multiple joint replacements - and, if so, what has the experience been like?

is the pain in your knee on the same side as the hip that will need replacing.
i ask as initially the reason i went to my GP was because i had severe pain in my right knee. i had an MRI scan on my knee and was told that i had a torn carteledge which would need surgery.
i was refered to the knee clinic. at the appointment the physio took one look at me and i was sent for a pelvic x-ray. the result was a THR.
there was nothing wrong with my knee. they said it was referred pain.
since my hip op I’ve been pain and medication free .
i wondered if your knee pain could be something similar.

hi gillian ,
i had terrible knee pain 5 years ago ( left knee) and after a clean out through keyhole surgery it helped for 4 years . last year it got really painful again and xrays showed bone on bone so after a few options given by my surgeon i had a full knee resurfacing. however what i didn’t realise at the time was my left hip was also bone on bone so even though my knee recovery went well i still had leg pain. so in june this year i had a hip replacement. recovery for hip is easier than knee ! i am now pain free but know that at some point i will need my right hip replaced and most likely my right knee will need either resurfacing or replacement…OA sucks  i am 56 years old , live in uk and work full time

Hi Pennypops, thanks for your reply. I’m glad to hear you have currently sorted out your problems and do hope your right side will never cause similar problems requiring treatment. We live in hope!!! I will wait to see what my xrays show and whether or not I will be referred to a specialist. I would have preferred to have had my operated right hip x-rayed too to ensure it is not causing or exacerbating the problem but perhaps the specialist will authorise that if I get to see him. It does seem to me that they look at specific problems in isolation without taking the whole body into account. I am 64 now, live in the south of England and, fortunately for me, do not work. Thanks again and best wishes.
