Hip, groin, and lower back pain in non-operative hip after 4 months

I had total right hip replacement on 4-11-2018.  I had no problems and have been recovering really well. I am 55 yrs old. But now 4 months later, my left hip, groin, and lower back hurts a lot.  I have had to start taking Advil again.  When surgery was done, X-rays only showed hip dysplasia  and arthritis in my right hip,  Nothing was wrong with my left hip 4 months ago.  Why is my left hip and groin hurting now?? Has anyone experienced this too?

I expect you have been putting the non-operated side through extra strain by relying on it to support the new hip. Don't forget you have been re-learning to walk again, and may not be doing it very straight.

I'd see a good physio to make sure it isn't your posture, we learn to walk with old habits, and that's not good.

I was told to throw away old worn shoes and get new ones as the old ones had become worn to my old walking pattern.

Hi keely,

Wow, we had our hip replacement on the same day! My lower back hurts mainly after sitting and it takes a few steps to get moving properly I also noticed the groin on my non operated hip started feeling uncomfortable. After I re-started using my elliptical walker the other hip is much better, just need to try and exercise my back better now. The doctor said there is damage to my back, probably after about 5 years of limping.

Graham, wise words. I would only add that the mention of the back pain suggests to me that the OP has a need to see a good chiropractor preferably not McTimoney trained one because I suspect that years of walking in an unbalanced way has caused problems with his back leading to the hip problems.

I would anticipate that getting the back sorted out would get rid of the hip problems. Cheers Richard

Hi Keely, I had my hip replaced 2 years ago (I fell awkwardly) and was fine apart from a limp until several months ago. I started with very bad back and hip pain and my limp was worse. Eventually could not stand it any more so went to see my GP - had x-rays and it was found that the limp had put strain on my back and that was the cause of the pain. I now wear a corset and the pain has gone but I still limp - but once I suss out the adjustable heel lifts I hope to be limp free?? Maybe this is your problem?

Regards

Jean

Not sure if this will help.

I realized during my recovery, while using a cane, that my walking was OFF because I was putting all emphasis on not causing discomfort to my surgical left hip. My right leg and back would get very achy.

I read somewhere that it was important to walk "heel to toe" and keep doing that. So, when I walk now, I think about it and keep with heel to toe. Better walking, balance improved, and ache diminished.  It has become a habit, too.
