Hip op 5days ago

Hi , I had my LHR 5days ago ,during the op the surgeon broke my pelvis ,I now have it pinned and plated , has anyone heard this happening ? Im can't weight bear for 6weeks , so at the moment I'm finding it a bit hard to move around until I get some upper Body strength, I'm 52 ,in good health and have good diet , also is this negligent ?

WOW,  did they say this could happen, where are you.? which procedure did you have?  If they didnt tell you this coukd hepoen then I would think so, but you will have to check with a medical brief. I wish you all the very best, you have been through the mill, lets us know how itproceeds.

How awful I think I have read on this site others having had broken bones from the op usually they have been diagnosed with osteoporosis after the op. They are very physical operations where our hip and sockets go through a lot of trauma. Unfortunately you will have a longer period of recovery. It is very hard to not weight bear but your bones need to repair before you can put pressure on them. I have a repaired fractured pelvis with plates and screws from car accident 22 years ago so have the utmost empathy for you. My hip oplast November resulted with damage to my femoral nerve. When we sign our permission to have replacement done I think fractured bones are listed as a possible outcome as with nerve damage. These are rare but we have both been damaged. Hopefully you are being advised about what you can do by a physio. I do hope you take care of yourself you need a lot of willpower and innerstrength the next few months. You also need emotional support I hope you have help to enable you to recover ((family or friends).

Iwonder why osteoporosis is not ruled out before the op?

Pelvic fracure is rare on my reading of the lit. One piece of good news. An old friend of mine, now deceased, fractured femur and pelvis in a fall from a ladder when he was in his 70s. He didn't get back to hiking up to the mountain huts in the Alps but he did get back to modest hill walking in Scotland. I knew one of his surgeons and was told that he'd done a pretty thorough job on his pelvis and they had spent over 3 hours putting him back together - I think they were pleased with the result.

So, the next few weeks will be frustrating and the time after that hard as you begin to move again. But all is not necessarily lost. I think the surgeon owes you an explanation of exactly what happened and preferably why with more detail than 'one of those things'.

Good luck, hope you get a good physio and take the rehab steadily. Keep us posted.

Hi

Mine isnt exactly the same but simialr.....L THR and 4 weeks post op I was doing an NHS exercise {the one where you put your hands on a table and  put your leg out to the side ...abducting} supposedly to strengthen your hip

One day there was a crack, my leg gave way under me and I was taken into hospital, had an X Ray and they said you have fractured your greater trochanter bone, there is nothing we can do about it, it will heal by itself but will take a long long time.....I wasnt told not to weight bear ...{just had 2 crutches} It would have been in my notes that I had osteopinia {diagnosed about 2 years ago} I was out of hospital in 2 days. I rang the GP and asked when my last DEXA scan was....she said that it was due at the end of this year but when she heard what had happened she got me an earlier  one. Yes....Osteoporosis!!!!! You would think that would be an exercise that I would have ben told not to do???

7 and a half months later and I'm still on 2 crutches.

Love

Eileen

Very unfortunate....are you good with the magnesium, some calcium and Vit D to keep bones healthy and strong? This is critical...

We are open to anything going wrong with these major surgeries and they are major....I ended up with Femoral Nerve damage and it's 4 yrs post op soon and the nerve damage is alive and going on.
