Hi All,
I'm 29 and have been scheduled for a LTHR on 19th December. I'm panicking that I won't be out of hospital in time for Christmas! Added on to this I was informed yesterday I only get 54 days sick pay (including weekends) at work so will need to start my phased return from 6th Feb...is this do-able? Up until 6 months ago I was incredibly active, I still walk lots at work but not so much exercise because of the pain!
Any help/advice would be much appreciated. I'm based in Leicester, UK.
Also, I 1000000000000% want it done under GA, is this likely or do I need to plead and beg?
Thanks,
Verity
I was out of hospital after two nights so I wouldn't think you'd be there for Christmas, although obviously it will depend how quickly you recover from the op.
Wow, that's some harsh employment practice! I wouldn't have thought that was doable but it depends what job you do, how physical etc. Is phased return a few hours a day or longer? If you aren't ready to return I imagine you'll have to get a doctor to sign you off so you can get statutory sick pay (assuming you're in the U.K.) at least.
Oh sorry I didn't see the rest of your post before I replied! You recover much more quickly if you have a spinal and sedation. You are honestly not awake for any of it so don't worry about feeling anything. I imagine if you really don't want that combination they will give you a GA though.
You already answered the question about your job. A lot of walking will make you very tired but you're pretty young and may well be fine.
Thanks Jenny, I'm so worried I won't enjoy Christmas! My work are part of the local council (I'm a non teaching head of year), so they're very strict with sick pay!
It depends on your location but in Canada, you'd certainly be out of the hospital by 6 days. What kind of approach is being used for your surgery? If it's posterior, you may not be very mobile by XMas, if it's anterior, you might be able to walk unassisted little bits at a time. Also, if it's posterior, you might be quite tired by then as you'll probably be in that window where it's quite hard to sleep (if I remember correctly the first couple of weeks are very hard and then you slowly become more comfortable and a bit stronger so you can adjust your body position a bit and it makes a big difference)
Best of luck,
Mike
Hi I'm sure you will be out quite quickly and as you are so young probably raring to go as well, hope you don't mind me asking why are you having HR so young, is it displacia ? Also are you going in royal for it
Hi!
I have osteoarthritis- the left is so bad there is no joint space left and I struggle to sleep at night, put on shoes, get in the bath....the list goes on! I also have impingement in both but the right isn't quite at the point of the left yet. I'm going into the general for it. Are you leicester based? I really want Anterior approach as this will help me recover quicker but have a feeling this will not be the case
I went in and had mine done on the 18th of October and was out of hospital on the 21st as soon as you can do stairs they say you can go home so you will be home for x mass just out of curiosity why do you want general anesthetic so much?
I hate anything medical, it makes me physically sick (WUSS), last time I went to the dentist I have to have 5 numbing injections because they just didn't work and I'm terrified of something like that happening again.
That's really hard for you i would think and great that your consultant is willing to do it so young, you ask for whatever form of anesthesia you want, my MIL had hers done there and never had any problems at all and was 81 at the time, she was reluctant to walk on it for ages though because it was ceramic and she was convinced that meant it was like a tea cup and would break LOL couldn't quite get through to her its nothing like a cup,
Yea I'm Leicestershire so not far away.
I dont think you will have a problem the spinal with sedation was very good didnt know about anything untill recovery room and wasn't groggy i have had ga in the past and it was a very long recovery just to get over the ga
Thanks Dominic, I'm slowly coming round to the idea of spinal after reading some bits on here. As long as I'm high as a kite I don't care! Just worried I'll panic too much.

I gad a total right hip replacement with spinal and sedation which was amazing. I was out in 4 days.
4 weeks on and I've been doing a little work from home just emails really. I'm now on one stick and hope to be no sticks in a few weeks. I'm intending to stay off the recommended 12 weeks but I think 8 weeks is doable, I'm taking advantage of my full pay for 6 months 😊
I was up walking just a few hours after surgery. Home the next day...pain for sure, but you can do it. I have had 3hip surg. since a fracture in 2013, and had spinal anesthesia for all. It was wonderful. Not sick after and recovered perfectly. Do not be afraid of spinal...they combine it with intravenous meds so you don't feel or remember a thing.
I was hoping for at least 4 months full so I didn't need to worry do much! Great to hear you're on the mend
Hi. I can't give any advice but I can share that I am havinga bilateral hip replacement not December 19th. I'm in the US. I will be having the anterior approach hopefully. My surgeon told me that I would be released on Thursday or Friday so definitely home for Christmas. I've been saying that all I want for Christmas is two new hips 😊
I will send out positive thoughts and prayers for you too that day. My surgery schedule at noon and you are probably in an earlier time zone than me so I can think of you and your surgery before I met out. Best wishes and good luck
Hi Rita,
Fingers crossed we have a very merry Christmas with our new hips! I will be thinking of you when I go in. I have to go to the hospital for 7.30am on the day of the surgery so not sure how long I will be waiting for.
Good luck!x
I am 69 had spinal injection with sedation didn't know anything after that until I came round in recovery. Walked that afternoon home two days later walking quite well after four weeks with one stick. Six months on hip is wonderful, sometimes forget I ever had it done. As you are young you should do well. Good Luck
Least with spinal they give you a painkiller as well with it so less pain afterwards i have know people still groggy and feeling sick for 3 days or so afterwards had my op on the morning back on ward before dinner managed to have a a brew and dinner wont be able to do that with ga
