Hip Op

Hello everyone and I hope the glimpse of sunshine has given everyone a hope for Spring soon to come. I am posting to find out if anyone has had hip replacement whilst suffering with PMR? I have just been put on the list to have mine done and am in some trepidation as to what the recovery process will be like, given that on a bad day the old legs don't exactly do as they are told....and having got down to 7mg over quite a long period will I have to go back up. If anyone has any experience of this I would be very glad to hear of it. Many thanks

Betty

Hi Betty

I haven't had a hip replacement but I did have a partial knee replacement last May. I was on 5 mg of Prednisone a day at that time. My rheumatologist told me to take 15 mg on the day of surgery and the following day, then 10 for two days and then back to five. It seemed to work just fine. My knee is much better than it was before the surgery and any difficulties I have seem to be due to the PMR. Recovery went well perhaps helped along by all the exercises before and PT after. Consult your doctor about your dosage but you shouldn't have to go up for more than a few days. You do need to go up because of the stress of the surgery though. Best of luck to you.

Hi Betty,

Like Jill I haven't had a hip replacement but I did have a knee op back in October just a few weeks after being diagnosed with PMR. I was on 15mgs Prednisolone at the time. I discussed this with the consultant the week before the op and he told me not to take the medication on the morning of the op as I would be 'nil by mouth' but that the Anaesthetist would give me a steroid injection to tide me over for a couple of days. I mentioned it again on admission and it was in my notes. I was given the injection before going down for the operation and I started back on the Pred the next morning. There were no problems. My Consultant said my recovery was actually aided by the Prednisolone as it kept the inflamation away from my knee. Good luck.

Thank you both so much. This site is so good - there is always someone who can advise and reassure. I can now relax and not be so anxious whilst I wait for my date to come up. Thanks again and I hope both your knees continue to be problem free for many years and the PMR leaves you soon.
