Hip ops in Germany - different experience?

Hi All,

Talking to my Alexandra Technique teacher yester -her mum has just had a THR hip op in Germany, and can't recall any of us sharing from there?

anyway, she said while it was an 'insurance' only' health service, apparently all THR hip op patients  stay in hospital for at least a week, followed by a week in intese rehab with lots of physio.

Most of us in UK seems to vary hugely in treatment regime, and by consultants/physio's advice as much as individual medical circs, but this is amazing. Much as I would have welcomed say 6 physio sessions post op to ensure i was doing the exercises correctly, i'd have hated a full two weeks in hospital!

Wonder if the revision rate is better. Wonder if the time needed to walk without limps is better. Possibly method in the madness

Hi mic71403

Although extra stay in hospital may be very boring - the outcome may be better ?

Hi Mic, That is indeed interesting and as you said the diversity of advice/physio/treatment in the UK is vast BUT I personally would have freaked out at having to be hospitalised for 2 weeks, never mind that I would have faded away due to the dire standard of the food 😨 .

I would also have missed out on the testosterone induced antics of Toto 😤

Hope you are well, Dot x

Used to be 10 days in NHS when they had money and no mrsa in hospitals. I ended up being in 5 days post op instead of 3 due to bowel stuuf but it really helped me. No home physio tho.

Please elaborate on Toto. Oh its the name of your dog not your new hip.!!!

Is Toto the consultant maybe?

Haha, naughty Mic, you know its my big lump of a pup 😉

Typical in France is a week in the hospital. Then if you want you can go to a rehab facility for a month. I elected to come home instead and took the daily visit of a nurse for 3 weeks together with a physical therapist in my home 3 times a week for a month.

I have a husband who is a very good cook and a good caregiver if you tell him what you want/need. As it worked out I'm glad I didn't go to rehab. Sent home by private ambulance and the ambulance guys had to carry me up a set of stairs. And I never got a bill for anything.

Hi jodi,

sounds fab......tho do i imagine you pay about 5% of yr salary into a health insurance scheme, like my cousin in France does?

It sounds France is rather like Germany - maybe we too fast in UK; tho most of us do well.

research on heart attack patients here suggests patients did BETTER with a week in UK hospital, rather than 3 weeks 15 yearsd ago. Movement and exercise is good for us!

Anyway, a big hi from Exeter, Devon

Oh yes we pay in, not sure how much though, my husband takes care of that.

H Jodi!

Mmmmm, in Paris  lots of  shops have no prices showing for lovely dresses - so guess his credit card is happy to spend out on his pretty wife!

Hi Mic

I have a German neighbour in Mallorca where I have a holiday home. She recently had a THR in Germany and appears to have recovered extremely well.I understand it was done in a private hospital and she has the advantage of a husband in the medical proffession so was no doubt well advised to find the best option.

On the other hand my daughter-in-law who is French reported that her father had his recent THR in Lyon and has recovered very quickly, and from my research I have learned that the Anterior procedure is favoured in France.

It would seem that they contribute to their health service costs, not everything is totally free of charge.May be a good idea for us in UK where our excellent NHS is being stretched to breaking point?

Oh yes, there are several diffent health care systems, like the railroad people, famers and others you pay into, but they all use the credit card like thing that has the chip in it no matter where you are getting your helathcate insurance from. But it is true it doesn't cover everything. Exception, major issues are 100% covered with no deductable, cancer ris one.

I think our general healthcare has a 30% deductable so we buy a rider policy that pays that difference, we pay I think it is around 400 Euros a month for we as a couple. What I like is prescription drugs are covered. So you pay into the main plan and then you buy a supplemental at your discrtion if you want to.

Is anterior the operation on the side of your hip? Because that is the way mine was done. I still don't understand why so many of you in the Uk get swelling after surgery. It must be the way they do your surgeries. And the speed of your surgeries. Almost everyone from the UK writes that their surgeries were done in about 2 to 2/12 hours. Mine in France was 4 hours. At first I suspected that it was the surgical drain they put in during surgery. My surgical drain was in for about 3 maybe 4 days. It only collected about half a cup of blood so I couldn't see how that is that big of a deal that would cause so many of you in the UK to have swelling afterwards.

Lynn out in California has been commenting after her surgery about 3 weeks ago so I asked her if she got swelling and she said she did not.  But it is consistant, most people from the UK who comment here report swelling and my guess is that there is something particular the UK surgeons do that causes that swelling afterwards. I have no idea what it is, but I will keep asking people outside the UK  if they had swelling or not.

I like everything about the French system, have no complaints exept at the public teaching hospital I was at, the food was horrible, unedible. And considering this is France and their heritage in food this was appalling. Also NO damned internet connection! 7 days and no internet! I about died. And I don't really use a cell phone hardly ever and can't use my phone to get the internet. Can you imagine a hospital with no internet connections for the patients? I imagine a private clinic would be much better, however I am a big believer in the expertise of the doctors in teaching hospitals so I opted for that over a private clinic.
