Hip pain 9 years after THR

Hello, I had THR L hip 9yrd ago and functionality has been perfect until 3-4wks ago when I started getting outer thigh pain and pain around back of hip.  Main concern is when walking up stairs; I can lift the foot onto the stair with no problem but can't weight bear to climb the stair without pain from back of hip and right around to down outer thigh.  Also notice stiffness in groin area when getting up from sitting position. Hip X-rays normal and ultrasound shows no bursitis in the greater trochanteric area.  Interested to hear I'd anyone else has experienced similar and needed revision.  I have a metal replacement in this hip with a polyethylene acetabular liner.  I am wondering about the liner being worn.  I know this doesn't necessarily show on X-ray .

Hi Nicky,

very similar To what you are going through. I had LTHR at 11 years it started to clunk ever so slightly then as time went on pain and I couldn't walk up stairs normally I had to put good foot followed by bad! I saw consultant and decided not to do anything just see how I went. So gradually over the next 2 years it got worse. Last May I was due to have a total revision but my operations kept getting cancelled ( had the op on 5 th time) by early December 2016 my hip had totally broken and I could barely walk at all,the pain was horrible and not much motion in hip needed help with everything. Couldn't walk very far needed crutches and a wheelchair. Anyway on 21 January 2017 I went into hospital to have my revision(5 th time) and I was lucky enough to get a bed so op went ahead. However once my surgeon was in there he just changed the head cup part and put a new plastic liner in as the stem( into the femur) was very firmly held in, his words he couldn't budge it, so didn't change that part. Wow the next day I was up and for the first time fully weight bearing on my hip it felt fab. So glad it's all over now, recovery for me was slow as I have weak muscles in left leg due to not using it for a while pre op. I'm still having physio and swimming a few times a week and feel great now. Ask me anything I will try to answer. Of course I had all the tests before the op, bone scans, hip aspiration, etc. My advice don't leave it get it done Asap.
