Hip pain

Its nine months now since my hip replacement, I still feel pain, I can't walk very far. At night if I turn over a couple of times I get pain all down my leg I try to lie on it and it hurts. I can't sit down all evening watching tele or else I get pain in my back so I end up standing some of the time ? I wonder if anyone has got the same experience?

Sorry you are experiencing this. Son is the double hippie - 5 months and one month - and stilll does have occasional pain in one or the other. Hope you still do your physical therapy and try to walk even though it hurts. Best to you.

Quite similar - I had my op at the end of October 2015 (one hour), and revision (another one hour op) early Jan 2016  due to misplaced insert.

I can walk for miles now, but never completely pain free. There is none of that 'lightning bolt down the leg' of the osteoarthritis, but I do get nagging pains in my lower back, and a tightening of my thigh as i get tired which makes me limp.  I do commute for about 2 hours into (and 2 hours out) of London daily now without too much problem, provided that I get a seat on the trains.

I can sit on my wonderful recliner (see my website) which is now minus the base I made to raise it.

At night, I still cannot lay on the operated side too long, the flesh feels like it is quite sfiff but I know it isn't, or like there is a rod just under the skin.

We all experience different things, andheal differently, and I suspect I will never ever be totally pain free.  All this, and I know that in the not too distant future I will have to have another, much longer and more complex operation to cut the socket part of the joint away from my pelvis, and have another one fitted with the insert in the right place this time.

I am 11 months post op and continue to have constant pain in my upper femur. Sitting is a battle, as I get pretty bad muscular pain in my back. I've been to numerous Drs and specialists and no one can give me relief. I've gone back to PT again and they believe that my pain comes from knotted up muscle and tissue around my hip pocket capsule. They have me doing a lot of stretching which has helped the back a bit. I will let you know if the stretching helps

hello jean,

warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum where personal stories and experiences are shared -

Have you seen your Ortho Surgeon about this? Sometimes they dismiss you after 6 weeks but I requested to be seen 6months post-op as well - You are still healing from major surgery and for some of us it takes longer - I  am one of them - I can't walk that far and if I have done more I feel it - tight and sore in groin and leg muscles - not pain ...

what kind of pain do you feel and is it on your operated side?

I have been diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis in right hip  - it sounds that you might have that as well - Maybe go see your doctor about that -

how are you getting on otherwise?

please come back when you have a question or concern ..

Hi Renee,

Well now I'm really feeling distressed ~ I have not had my THR yet, but I've been following this forum in preparation of it. My symptoms now are symptoms you and Rocketman are experiencing post THR, i.e. tightening of the thigh and limping, if walking too far, you feel tight and sore in the leg muscles. Are these symptoms normal after surgery and will eventually go away? Walking is what I do, the only form of exercise I get, so it is very discouraging to feel fatigued after five minutes and having limitations such as the ones listed above.

It scares me to think of going through the entire surgery process, recovery, etc., and not feel any differently afterwards.

I'm not expecting miracles, but just being able to walk with a "spring in my step" again, do you know what I mean?

Thank you all ~this is a great forum.

Betty

The tightening in my thigh appears after a day of work in London, sitting at my desk.  I just 'walk through it' and make myself to walk properly without a limp.  Sure it's hard, but so worth doing for the reward of walking without the pain of OA.

Before the operation I could hardly walk at all, now I can walk for miles.  When at the seaside recently with my wife, she was the one wanting to rest after 4 miles in the sand when I was still walking fine.

Well that is encouraging, to think of being able to walk for miles again!

Thank you for your response!

Betty

Betty walking is one of the things most of us can do with no problem. I walked 3 miles on the treadmill at 8 weeks, no pain. Walking is what will build up your muscles that have been weaked by not walking correctly for so long...You should be fine. I had my surgery May 2015..walking is what I can do best!

Sorry Jean this message was for Betty..........

Thank you Loral! I'm feeling much encouraged now by the responses 😋

Congratulations on walking 3 miles at only 8 weeks! Amazing!!!

Oh Betty,

I didn't mean to make anybody feel bad. ....

it is such an individual process. ,.I was in such a bad shape,in a lot of pain that I couldn't do any exercises etc.

I felt so much better after R THR. ..Unfortunately and unexpectedly my other hip went bad that 2ndTHR was done 6 months later. ..

There were some other things, not THR related .....

I know that you will walk with a spring in your step ,as will I. ..

When is your surgery date?

Oh Renee, you didn't make me feel bad 😍 You are so sweet.

No, I just freaked out a little when you & Rocketman were describing the same symptoms post op that I'm having pre op, and made me wonder for a bit if the surgery was worth it! After the responses, I know that it will be worth it!

I want to hear everything, so don't feel bad or hold back anything!

I don't have my date set yet. I'm thinking of waiting till after first of the year as I'm having varicose vein stripping done this month, then going away in October, then the holidays! If it sounds like I'm putting it off, I probably am, ha, ha

Betty

phew ... oh good ...thank you !!!

I was in denial for years (4 !!! no wonder I was in such a bad shape) ... thought I pulled a groin muscle ...

It will be worth it ---

I went into this surgery thinking that it was a walk in the park, easy-peazy as I was told about all these people who knew people who were walking and dancing in no time !!!! and some (mostly men) actually get there fast ---

Stripping varicose veins doesn't sound like fun either ---

please let us know how you are getting on, okay

So glad we haven't put you off - it is a wonderful feeling to be free of the OA pain after the operation.

It is a long recovery back to full mobility, but it really is worth it - and that from someone who had to have revision after 4 weeks, and is going to have to have further more complex revision.

Don't put it off too long - the better shape you are in before the operation, the easier and faster the recovery is
