I have heard of a couple of people on one of the sites their hips had popped out but didnt go into detail on how it happend and how they found out ....I am in my third wk and iam still forgetting about bending the wrong way until i get the sharp pain reminder so i wondered if anybody on here has experienced the problem
Iv had it nearly happen once when i sat on my sofa that hadnt been raised. Needless to say my sofa is now sitting on top of breeze blocks haha. Its not very common and if you follow all the rules you shouldnt have anything to worry about
Thanks Sarah ha ha lucky we can laugh at it now ..Ihad my knee done at Christmas and there was not the same restrictions but i will do my best
to behave and remember what i am doing thanks again for your reply
Yes its funny now but at the time it was incredibly painful and scary. I was so panicy haha.
At my age im trying to postpone needing a knee replacement but inevinatbly it will needed doing eventually haha
Hi Alex,
Warm welcome to this friendly forum of hippies where we share our personal stories and experiences ..
Hmmm .... hips popping out ??? not sure what you mean by bending the wrong way - you are not supposed to bend beyond 90 degrees (when you had posterior THR) - good thing that your body is warning you that you're doing something wrong here -
I think that popping out, like dislocating, of hip joint, is extremely painful and requires going to the hospital -
you just had major surgery and a lot of healing is taking place - if you are up to it , have a look at the live surgery on youtube (not for the weak of stomach) - it will give you a better understanding of what your body has gone through ..
however, when you are in pain or pain is getting worse, please contact your doctor and have it checked ...
Have you had your scar checked yet?
warm big hug
renee
Hi Alex , it takes a fair bit of force to dislocate once youre at the 3-4 week stage . It can happen quite easily earlier on but as things settle down and start to heal the new joint becomes more embedded. Although having said that a friend who is a GP dislocated hers by hitching herself up onto the edge of a desk top at about 4 weeks . It is very unusual though and its usually very painful , that sharp intense pain you get if bending too much, bringing leg towards the midline etc is a good indicator that you need to reverese what you are doing and quickly ! The body uses pain as a defense mechanism so if it hurts stop ! I think only about 1% of people dislocate so as I know one I,m hoping that lets me off - laws if orobability and all that - to relocate it you have to go to A and E and be treated under sedation - would imagine its a bit sore for a week or so after so can slow general recovery for a short while xxx
Thanks bini nice of you to reply I am on my third week I will take of what I am doing take care Alex
There is a nice 'dislocation risk' graph on my website if you are interested, showing how the risk decreases over time.

I inadvertently twisted my leg climbing on to the bed to do my exercises this afternoon. The pain was excruciating but I am still able to walk. Scared the crap out of myself and started to cry, thinking I had really caused myself an injury. It seems OK now but I will be taking it easy for the rest of today.
Hi monty hope your ok and settled after your fright you should be ok Iwas in just before Christmas for full knee job 4rth week I was edging over to come off the bed moved a bit to far before I get my legs round ended on the floor lucky my rear took the hit so its a case of be lucky be carefull
take care Alex
Thanks Alex. I am a bit tender but everything seems to be working fine. I've upped my pain pills and have been icing alot. Back to the walking for the next little while until I regain my confidence.
It happened to me 6 months after I had my THR. I was bending over to clean some things out of a cabinet and I did not kick my leg back. I felt the most excruciating pain ever. I was lucky someone was with me because I could not have walked to my phone across the room. I was taken by ambulance to the ER and they sedated me and put it back in place. I had to wear a brace for six weeks. My doctor told me that someone recently popped out her hip after 7 years.
My advice: be careful and use your hip precautions because you really do not want this to happen to you!
