Hip Replacement in younger people

Hi All, I am 34 years old and had a THR 3 weeks ago. I have 2 daughters 2 & 3 and have had lots of help. My biggest worry is that everybody will have exhausted all of their holiday from work by the time I am 6 weeks post op and then I am alone with the girls. Are most people mobile and back to normal by 6 weeks? I know its an individual thing, but I don't have much choice. My husband has to go back to work, My mum does and so does my Dad! I am paying for private physio once a week to hurry the process up but he can only do so much! it certainly is an emotional rollercoaster!!!

Thanks.x

Hi, my wife went back to work after three weeks but instructed me not to do too much, be wise and set up po and pans etc in kitchen for me to make and burn dinner. You will learn some techniques comfortable to yourself around your house especially if picking up anything by bad leg back good lg bent . You will surprise yourself but always take it slow and easy when first left alone. Keep well

Everyone is different but if you are fairly fairly fit otherwise and have an opportunity to walk a little with the youngsters, you should find that you become stronger and less independent as the days go by.  I am lucky in that I have noticed an improvement almost daily (6 weeks post op) and I can now take long walks with the dog without crutches.  Don't overdo things but be as active as your body allows. I am back to work next week so that is another challenge to look forward to!

Hi Rachel! We are all different! We all heal in different ways! I am just over 7 weeks post op! I had to get carers in for my hubby, as he s disabled! And just before my six weeks were up we had social service s around here, who wanted me to pick up the ropes! However, my hubby said he wasn't happy and the care should be extended! So we have another review this week! Then on the 16th we are going away! I am still on a stick and will be as I have arthritis in both hips and knees! Plus I am still bruised! But I am learning to adapt! And refuse for Hubby's carers to help me apart from putting my sock on! As I still can't bend properly! Please listen to your body! Regards Amanda

Hi Rachel,

I feel you. I do not know which type of surgery you had, but in general, if all goes well, by six weeks, you will be much stronger and able to do lots more. My first gut feeling as I read your post is to warn you to be very very careful about the natural instinct to bend straight down. Like to pick up your little ones.

Have no fear, just plan your movements and work diligently at your strengthening exercises. Just guard that 90 degree rule.

Glad you have such great support and hope your recovery continues to do well.

Don't worry you will get a big breakthrough about week 4 or 5. Whereas you seem to be getting better a little bit better each day, along about weeks 4 & 5 you will have a big breakthrough where you rapidly get a LOT better.

I think having a 3 year old is actually going to be a help as the most inconvenient thing is not being able to carry things, like a glass of juice, to carry that from the kitchen to the living room, your little 3 year old will be a big help to you for that one issue alone. JUst remember to not put weigt on it so hellping your daughter off the potty you are going to have to focus on putting your weight on your non operated leg to carry the weight.

Trust me you will get a good breakthrough around weeks 4 & 5 and you will then not be so worried like you are now. after 6 weeks taking care of a 2 year old & 3 year old is not going to be a walk in the park but it probably is actually going to be better than when you suffered with a bad hip. Even witthout recovering from a THR being mom to small kids is exhausting. The 3 year old can go get you things like if you left your phone in the kitchen. I would feel differently if you had a 1 year old and a 2 year old, but a 2 year old & a 3 year old I think you will do just fine.

Thank you very much for your comments, unfortunately as soon as I am alone with the girls, I will be twisting to get them into the car seat and not lifting the 2 year old is not an option. Hopefully I continue to progress and by 6 weeks, the consultant thinks that I am fit to do normal things! I certainly didn't plan to have a hip replacement at this age, but these things are sent to test us! Best of luck for a speedy recovery to all of the other hippies out there.xx

BIG WARNING!

Be VERY carefull of twisting.

You would be better off to put a footstool in the car and try and get the 2 year old to get into her seat herself using the footstool.

What is so important during the day that you are risking your surgery, what is so important that you need to put yoour two year old in the car during the day, so important that you can't wait until your husband gets home.

I'll telly you wy. I had my THR a year ago, I WAS PERFECT! In February I had to go take care of my mother, she is elderly and to help her out of her recliner I had to use my back and legs. They give your weight limits, please respect those weight limits.  I HURT my hip, it is not he same. So whereas I was absolutly PERFECT now I am not. I put weight and force on that leg pullling my mom up from the chair and now I have to go back to the surgeon. Be very cognizent and aware not to twist. The last thing you want is to have to go back in under the knife to get a revision because you pushed it/ignored the directions. I know it is hard being young and having young children, but do you really want to go through this again.

I have been home 3 weeks now (I was with my mom 2 1/2 months) and I am hoping that it will heal up again. So far it isn't, I direguared the instructions and I wish I would not have. I should have only used my good leg, put all my weight on my good leg, but my operated on leg was so darned good, and it is my dominate leg, that I did that which I was told not to do. I am going to wait another week or two then I am going to have to go back to the surgeon. Please learn from my mistakes.
