I really need some serious advice regarding this other than my consultants whom I see again tomorrow. I had thr on 11may. 2017, became infected, after being in critical care, blood transfusion I had to have wash out and two parts replaced, this was on May 28th. I'm now at home after a 2 week stay in hospital taking intravenous antibiotics. I am now on 2x500mls x3 daily of antibiotics. I am due to travel to Canada to our nieces wedding on July 14th, I shall be advised by my consultant tomorrow after more blood tests have been taken. I want to make a serious adult decision here, I am a little scared about the 9.5 hrs flight. Am I being foolish to go???
Sorry to tell you this but in my opinion yes my dear you would be foolish to go, It is not only the long flight but also being in somebody's else's bed/hotel, different country etc. I would not go to England (I am in Canada TRHR May24) at this time and I had no complications to speak of. Stay home, enjoy the videos and heal in peace
I think it could be a no no, even if you had had no complications.
i was told no long haul flights for at least 3 months, short haul earlier.
Like Kaura, there is no way I would attempt that flight at your stage.

Hi Sheppy, no long haul for 3 months thatz what I was told.. I had an infection after my RTRH in Sept 2015. My infection was picked up pretty quickly and I was treated wirh IV antibs for 3 days.
You risk disclocation due to air pressure if you go before that time. Can you not have the service streamed so you can be part of it still? X
Like the other replies you've received I was also told no long haul flights for three months mainly due to the risk of deep vein thrombosis. The operation alone puts you at risk of this for three months without the additional risk posed by the flight. I'm afraid the only "long haul" you'll be doing for a while is recovering from the operation!
In all honesty, I would not do it.

I know exactly what you are feeling, I had been in pain for 1 1/2 years prior to my surgery, I missed many a birthday, grandsons playing footbally etc, what I missed the most was "running my dog". I have been doing Dog Agility for the past 9-10 years with my little mutt Missy (20pounds) it was our life and joy and then (it seemed suddenly) I just could not get through a course without pain. Now after my surgery I hope I will be able to do it again, if not run then at least walk the dog, maybe some obidience trials but at least I will be able to get out there and participate again. So Sheppy stay home, watch the videos as I said before and the next time there is a function you will be there for sure.
Dear Sheppy. I'm at the moment fighting infection in my hip. Unlike you this has been a 6 and a half year battle of an extrordinary things that have gone wrong! Please look after yourself, I truley thought that if I carried on after each surgery, now 11 on the same hip, things would improve. how wrong was I. So take a breath and look at the big picture of a happy and healthy future of lots of activities and trips.
I do have a few questions for you, if thats OK. I note that you only had 2 parts replaced....was the stem retained? because I've been told everything needs to come out. Did you have a Spacer while the hip was out? [unfortunately I cant because of massive muscle loss do to repeated Pseudotumours and metal on metal corrosion] What mobility did you have during that time? How did they decide when to reimplant the metal, I've been told could be anything from 4-6 months or longer. I've never heard of one being put back in so quickly.

I'm sorry you have gone through all this. My wound broke open and bled, this happened twice, I then had a wash out and had the liner and ball replaced, bigger ball put in due to possible muscle loss. The stem in my femur was not removed. I don't know about a spacer?
Sheppy I have to be honest I don't think you can travel that far.... You will one day be back on a plane going to anywhere in the world, but given what has happened to you it simply could not be worth it.
I flew long haul (7 hours) at 3 1/2 months. It was a little too soon to truly enjoy it, and I was abit overwhelmed at the airport and felt quite vulnerable with the crowds at Heathrow. I did manage the flight okay but it was tiring and I wish I had left it a little longer. Wishing you so much love and light in your recovery. You have been so brave. Treat yourself to a lovely holiday in a few months time.
